What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Chepe train journey offers breathtaking, unmatched views of the Copper Canyon, making it a highlight for many travelers. However, the onboard experience can be disappointing, with issues like unreliable Wi-Fi, poor food quality and hygiene in the buffet, and potential schedule delays. While staff are generally helpful, first-class amenities may not meet expectations.
"The site is very clean, but I was disappointed that visitors were not allowed onto the platform to take photos. This is meant to be a tourist attraction, yet no trains were running and the display trains seemed to serve little purpose. The toilets needed attention, and the place was extremely quiet during my visit—we were the only people there."
Alain Merle
"Fairly disappointing.
The train was supposed to depart at 6am, so we arrived at 5:15 to allow time for ticketing, luggage etc.
Lucky we went early, because a couple of hundred people turned up and for a while there was no queue.
The line didn’t move until after 6, and the train didn’t leave until after 7. It also broke down for about half an hour during the trip.
The staff were very friendly and helpful, as we had a few bags to get up and down from the carriage. They also helped with the carriage temperature when it was very cold.
The buffet was awful. There were no seats; standing room only at bar tables. The food (burritos and tamales) was disgusting. We threw it in the bin. The sauce bottles were also disgusting. They clearly had not been cleaned for a long time. This is a huge hygiene issue if not attended to daily.
No tables between seats. Not up to standard for First Class.
There was no scenery to brag about on this part of the trip.
There were at least three heavily armed guards on the train. This was good to see; given the reports of cartel activity nearby."

"Very small trainstation for the start of the El Chepe through the Copper Canyon. 100% worth the hassle to get there."

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
While the scenic views of the Copper Canyon can be captivating for all ages, consider the duration of your chosen route. Shorter segments, like Creel to El Fuerte, might be more manageable for younger children. Ensure you have activities, books, or games to keep them occupied during downtime, especially if the Wi-Fi is not working.
💰 Budget Travelers
Look for deals or book in advance if possible, though prices can still be a factor. Be prepared for a more basic experience in terms of amenities and comfort, but the incredible views remain the primary draw, making it a worthwhile adventure even on a budget.
📸 Photography Enthusiasts
Consider a camera with a good zoom lens to capture distant vistas and details. A wide-angle lens can also be useful for the expansive canyon panoramas. Be mindful of the train's movement when shooting; a tripod might be challenging to use effectively on a moving train, so a stable hand or a monopod could be more practical.

The Chepe Train Experience
Despite its scenic appeal, the onboard experience can be mixed. While staff are often praised for being friendly and helpful, issues like unreliable Wi-Fi, questionable buffet food quality, and hygiene concerns have been noted by passengers. Delays and occasional breakdowns are also part of the reality of this extensive rail journey, so patience is key.
Security is a consideration, with armed guards sometimes present on the train, reflecting the regional context. For many, however, the unparalleled views of the Copper Canyon make the entire experience, including any potential inconveniences, absolutely worth it.
Navigating Ticketing and Schedules
Be prepared for schedule variations. Trains, particularly the Chepe Regional, can depart later than scheduled and may even experience unexpected delays or breakdowns during the journey. Travelers advise building buffer time into their itineraries to accommodate these possibilities. Understanding the difference between the Chepe Express and Chepe Regional services can also help in choosing the right ticket for your needs and budget.
When arriving at the station, expect a bustling environment before departure. While staff are generally helpful with luggage, the boarding process can be slow. Having your tickets and identification ready will streamline the process.
Dining and Amenities Onboard
Given these concerns, many passengers opt to bring their own food and drinks. This is a practical strategy to ensure a more enjoyable journey, especially on longer routes like Chihuahua to Los Mochis. While first-class service is available, some passengers have noted that amenities, such as the absence of proper dining tables, may not meet expectations.
Furthermore, the onboard Wi-Fi is notoriously unreliable, even in first class. Travelers needing to stay connected for work or communication should not depend on this service and should make alternative arrangements.
