Reviews Summary

While Los Manantiales is an architectural marvel, it's currently in ruins and not accessible, leading to disappointment for some visitors expecting a fully restored attraction. The Xochimilco canal experience itself can be marred by aggressive pricing from trajinera operators, with some finding the experience overpriced and the water quality lacking. However, the historical and cultural significance of the area, along with its unique canal system, remains a draw for many. Reddit

"Felix Candela’s masterpiece, not currently open to the public. A spectacular expression of his experiments in thin concrete shells, recently restored."

Michael Stern

"Los Manantieles de Xochimilco is today a building in ruins. It could be said that it is the most complete and perfect design of the architect Félix Candela and that it is barely preserved. The building was built in 1958.  Candela's design is based on a lotus flower floating on water. The extraordinary building looks like one of this architect's strangest designs. Seating around 1,000 diners, Candela's design incorporates four hyperbolic paraboloids cast in concrete. The plant covers almost 42 meters in diameter and the maximum height reaches about 5.90 meters indoors. The building suffered some damage in the 2017 earthquake.  Architecture and culture enthusiasts are waiting for restoration. The Xochimilco Springs (Manantieles) continue to be an almost mystical sight for those who pass through the canals. It is a historical part of the Pueblo Santa María Nativitas , and is a step away from the Madreselva Flower Market ."

Davi Small

"An architectural and historical icon in the heart of Xochimilco
Los Manantiales is an architectural gem that combines history, nature, and design with a deep symbolic connection to water and the culture of Xochimilco. Its lotus-shaped structure, with petal-shaped concrete roofs, evokes the harmony between the human and the natural.

Designed by architect Félix Candela, this space is not only notable for its beauty and originality, but also for its cultural value as a meeting point for generations and a witness to life on the canals of Xochimilco. It is nestled in a setting steeped in tradition, very close to trajineras (boats), markets, and living expressions of the heart of Mexico.

Visiting Los Manantiales is a way to honor the city's heritage and recognize the value of water, architecture, and history in one place."
