Reviews Summary

Visitors find Calle Subterranea Miguel Hidalgo to be a unique and historic part of Guanajuato, especially vibrant during festivals like Día de Muertos with its food, music, and crafts. While some note it can be a bit stark outside of events, its colonial charm and innovative design are appreciated. A few cautionary notes about pickpockets during busy times are mentioned.

"we visited guanajuato over día de muertos and found the calle subterránea to be an incredible place to explore local culture. the pedestrian walkway is normally a relatively medieval and stark space, but from the 31 of october to the 3 of november, the calle is filled with food and drink stands, local artisans/makers, mummies from the museum, and musicians/live music at each end of the street. we stumbled upon it around 8pm and stayed for a couple of hours for some mezcal tastings, tacos, and live music! it gets quite crowded and noisy as the night goes on, so if you’re not a fan of crowds i’d avoid going around dinner time (7-10) and see if there are some earlier hours to explore. but it is fun for the entire family which is always a plus!"

This unique engineering feat allows for both vehicular traffic and pedestrian walkways, offering a distinct way to navigate the historic center. TikTok

Experiencing this street is like stepping into a different layer of the city. During normal times, it's a functional, albeit stark, passage. However, its true magic unfolds during local celebrations. The transformation during events like Día de Muertos is remarkable, turning the utilitarian space into a vibrant cultural artery. Reddit

Visitors can appreciate the colonial architecture that lines the street's exposed sections and entrances. It’s a reminder of the city's rich history and how its inhabitants have adapted to its unique topography. The dual nature of the street – its practical purpose and its potential for festive transformation – makes it a must-see. Reddit
