It's a great spot for a peaceful swim, especially on weekdays when crowds are minimal. Some note the water could be a bit cleaner, but overall, it's considered a worthwhile and beautiful experience. Reddit

"Very fun experience to swim in a cave!
The water was actually quite pleasant, not too cold. The water could be a bit cleaner, there is a thin layer of something but still pretty clear!

It not too deep and also not a very big pool. When we visited at 1pm on a Wednesday we were the only ones.

There are some simple changing rooms, shower and bathroom- nothing fancy but sufficient.
100 pesos and worth it in our opinion"

"Excellent little cenote. Small and quiet. Very kind woman collecting our entry fee. Low ceilinged (enclosed) but beautiful. Also, open much later than some of the ones we visited, for which we travelers were grateful."

"AMSTAR😱 ITS A TERRIBLE EXCURSION COMPANY 😡 with the terrible Customer Service 👎 What the advertise and what they sell to you is completely different to what you get when you get to your destination we also had the terrible experience with the quad bikes. They were old and bad quality when we mention to them they just didn’t want to know some of the bikes they had a broken back.
The absolute worst part of our excursion was the cenote. We’ve visited beautiful cenotes around Merida and Tulum, so we expected something similar. What we got was basically a swamp — dirty, muddy, and completely uninviting. It was not a cenote by any reasonable definition. We were shocked and disgusted. I’m including a picture so you can see for yourself what they tried to pass off as a cenote.

Do yourself a favor and stay far away from Amstar activities. This was one of the worst excursions we’ve ever taken — overpriced, misleading, and completely disrespectful of guests’ expectations and time."

Understanding Cenotes: Nature's Swimming Pools

Cenotes are natural sinkholes formed when limestone bedrock collapses, exposing groundwater underneath. The Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico is famous for its thousands of cenotes, each with unique formations and water characteristics. They were sacred sites for the ancient Maya, often used for rituals and sacrifices. Reddit

Cenote Chihuán Holcá is an example of an enclosed cenote, meaning it's largely covered by a cave-like structure. This offers a different experience than open-air cenotes, with cooler temperatures and dramatic rock formations. The water clarity can vary, but it's generally clean enough for a refreshing swim. Reddit

When visiting any cenote, it's important to be mindful of the delicate ecosystem. Avoid using sunscreen or insect repellent before swimming, as these chemicals can harm the water quality and the organisms that live within it. Many cenotes provide showers for rinsing off before entering the water. Reddit

Navigating the Yucatán's Cenote Route

The Yucatán Peninsula is dotted with countless cenotes, offering a diverse range of experiences from vast open pools to intimate cave systems. Cenote Chihuán Holcá is a smaller, more secluded option that provides a peaceful escape from the more popular, crowded cenotes. Reddit

Many travelers create their own cenote tours by renting a car. This allows for flexibility in visiting multiple sites in a single day, such as combining Chihuán Holcá with other nearby cenotes like Cenote X'kekén or Cenote Samulá. Planning your route in advance can help maximize your time and minimize travel between locations. Reddit

When planning your cenote hopping, consider the type of cenote you prefer. Open cenotes are great for sunbathing and diving, while semi-open and cave cenotes offer a more mysterious and cooler swimming experience. Chihuán Holcá's enclosed nature makes it a unique stop for those seeking a different kind of cenote adventure. Reddit
