Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Museo del Paste to be an affordable and fun experience, especially the hands-on paste-making class which is a highlight for families. However, some note that photography is restricted, food options are limited, and the museum itself is quite small. A few reviewers mentioned encountering rude staff at the entrance.

"They don't let you take pictures and the coffee shop doesn't really have much. So, no food options. Also, there are very limited flavor options to make your own paste. The place is clean yet small and most of the tour time is taken in an audiovisual room where they tell you some of Hidalgo's story"

Thazia T

"The guy on the entrance was utterly rude, didn't want to sell tickets in advance because their next guided visit was half an hour later, despite being a public museum they said they have no restroom service.

Such a bad attitude of the guy in the front desk when I just asked a question about the price and content of the museum."

Once Upon A Book

"So fun, interesting.
There were guides that were able to speak a rough translation of English but there are lots of pictures and things to see. You can get the idea.
The fun came in when they gave the group a cooking lesson and demonstrated and we all had a "hands on" lesson to cook our own pastes which we later cooked & consumed.
The kids really loved it.
Place is clean and nice.
COLD! So be prepared for the altitude and the very chilly temps!!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History of the Paste

The Museo del Paste delves into the fascinating history of the Cornish pasty's journey to Mexico. Introduced by English miners in the 19th century, the pasty became a beloved staple in Hidalgo, particularly in the mining towns like Real del Monte and Mineral de la Reforma. The museum highlights how this simple, portable meal sustained miners through long shifts underground. It explores the cultural exchange and adaptation that occurred, leading to uniquely Mexican variations of the pasty.

Visitors can learn about the influence of English culture on the region through exhibits that showcase historical photographs, artifacts, and stories. The museum aims to educate visitors on the economic and social impact of mining and the culinary traditions that emerged from it. The audiovisual presentation provides a comprehensive overview, setting the stage for the hands-on experience that follows. Reddit

This deep dive into the pasty's heritage offers a unique perspective on Mexican culinary history and the enduring legacy of international migration. It's a chance to connect with the local culture through its food and understand the stories behind this iconic dish. Reddit

The Paste-Making Experience

A central attraction at the Museo del Paste is the hands-on paste-making class. This interactive session allows visitors to actively participate in creating their own pasties. Under the guidance of museum staff, you'll learn the traditional method of preparing the dough, filling it with savory ingredients, and sealing it with the characteristic crimped edge. It’s a fun and educational activity that appeals to all ages.

Participants typically roll out the dough, add a pre-prepared filling (often a savory meat mixture), and then learn the technique of crimping the edges to seal the pasty. The freshly made pasties are then cooked, and visitors get to enjoy their own culinary creation. This is often cited as the most enjoyable and memorable part of the museum visit, offering a delicious reward for your efforts. Reddit

This immersive experience provides a tangible connection to the history and culture of the paste. It’s more than just a museum visit; it’s a chance to engage with a local tradition in a fun, practical way. The satisfaction of making and eating your own pasty is a highlight that many visitors cherish. Reddit
