Reviews Summary

Janitzio Island offers a charming and affordable experience with its scenic boat ride, vibrant local culture, and the iconic monument at its summit. Visitors appreciate the colorful crafts, the unique Purepecha traditions, and the panoramic views. However, be prepared for numerous stairs and potential crowds, especially during peak seasons.

"Nice boat ride from Pátzcuaro. A colorful island with locals living and working there. They sell every souvenir imaginable plus lots of food and alcohol. Colorful and surrounded by nice views. The trip isn’t complicated or expensive so I say it’s worth it. I probably wouldn’t eat or drink anything from the lake but that’s just my opinion."

"Get there early. We parked at the embarcadero in Patzcuaro (20 pesos) at 9:00 AM (not busy at all). Paid 70 pesos for a round trip ticket, got on a boat and were going underway in a few minutes. The trip to Janitzio is about 30 minutes that includes a little show by the local “fishermen” (it’s just for show). There are a dozen or so locals “fishing” in a traditional way as you approach the island, then you tip ‘em. Why not, you get could pics that they posed for you. Enjoy a slow walk up the stairs (use the ones to the left in order to see the cemetery and a good lookout spot) through the town past vendors and countless michelada stands up to the statue at the top (10 pesos to enter). Listen to the local residents (Purepechas) speaking in their native tongue. Be respectful as many of them are still getting used to how the movie, Coco, has changed their lives. Not All of them want so many tourists around all the time. We got back on a return boat at 1:00 PM. By then, the island was getting pretty saturated with tourists and we were glad to have gotten there early. Next time, we plan to spend the night on the island in one of several tiny hotels so that we can really take it all in."
