What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Reviews for Barcelo Maya Grand Resort are highly polarized. Many guests praise the expansive beachfront, numerous pools, and the convenience of the all-inclusive setup, with some returning multiple times. However, a significant number of negative reviews cite issues with food quality, outdated rooms, poor service, and concerns about animal welfare due to the dolphin pool.
"I stayed at the Barceló Maya Grand on the Tropical side and paid for a premium package, but nothing about the experience felt premium. We couldn’t order any drinks to the room unless it was beer for the fridge, so when our friends arrived we had to walk across the resort to buy bottles of wine from the gift shop and then go find our own glasses because they wouldn’t send any to the room.
At checkout, they accused us of not paying for the wine, even though their own system clearly showed it as a gift shop wine purchase. We even showed our credit card statement, but because it was the Remembrance Day weekend, the charge posted later. They refused to let us leave until we paid for the wine a second time.
The à la carte restaurants were just as bad. When we sent back a fish dish that wasn’t edible, the manager told us that nothing is fresh because it’s a big resort. She also told us we could only choose one more entrée after sending that one back, and it felt like they were just trying to rush us out.
We were there for my friend’s wedding and had booked a family dinner at one of the à la cartes a month in advance. They told us we wouldn’t all be at one table, but we’d be in the same area. The day of, they scattered us all over the restaurant. The manager started yelling and waving her hands at the bride as if we were asking for something unreasonable. It was honestly embarrassing.
The buffet was extremely disappointing unless you want to eat hash browns and guacamole every day. On top of that, the resort has a dolphin pool, which we didn’t know about when booking. It was under construction, but the fact that they support keeping dolphins in captivity was upsetting to learn.
Overall, we wouldn’t even give this resort one star. The service was terrible, the food was low quality, and the way staff and management treated us was unacceptable. We definitely won’t be returning."

"The resort is huge and quite crowded, so it can feel a bit busy at times. The pool area is excellent — very large and really enjoyable. The rooms could be better though; ventilation wasn’t great and they felt a bit basic for the price. The food at the main buffet was average, both in quality and variety — definitely room for improvement. On the positive side, the pool bar was great, with good drinks and friendly service. The à la carte restaurants looked nice, but the food quality was disappointing. Overall, it’s a good resort, but not perfect."

"We just returned from our honeymoon trip and it was absolutely wonderful! We have actually stayed at this resort 7 times, it's like coming to a second home for us. We have always been treated great by all the staff. This trip we had a fabulous bartender in Oscar at the Colonial swim up pool bar. He remembered our drinks was joking, super friendly and engaging, not just with us but the many others at the bar with us. Over the years that we have been going here we have stayed in the Colonial, Tropical and Caribe as all have different themes but all have had wonderful service! The rooms are cleaned daily, in room refrigerators are stocked daily and every employee I have ever encountered has been nothing but friendly and helpful. We have been to the beaches early in the morning and witnessed them being cleared of weeds that have washed ashore overnight. The landscaping is always beautifully maintained along with the pools and beaches. They have absolutely everything available to you on the property! We usually stay for about 10 days at a time and sometimes we don't ever leave the property!"

Exploring the Barcelo Maya Grand Resort Complex
When booking, it's important to understand which hotel you are staying in, as this can influence your immediate surroundings and access to certain amenities. However, guests staying in most of the hotels can typically access the facilities of the others, creating a 'resort within a resort' experience. This allows you to enjoy over 10 restaurants and buffets, multiple pools, and a giant beach, all within the Barcelo Maya Grand Resort complex. The sheer scale of the resort means that while it offers a wealth of options, it can also feel quite busy at times, and getting from one end to another can involve a significant amount of walking.
Dining Experiences and Food Quality
For those with specific dietary needs, such as vegetarian or vegan preferences, options can be somewhat limited, especially outside the main buffet. It is advisable to communicate these needs to the restaurant staff in advance to see what accommodations can be made. The resort also offers numerous bars, including swim-up bars, serving a wide selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, ensuring guests can stay refreshed throughout their stay.
Activities and Entertainment
Evenings at Barcelo Maya Grand Resort come alive with entertainment options. The resort typically hosts nightly shows, and there's a nightclub for those looking to dance the night away. For a unique natural experience, the resort is conveniently located across the street from three cenotes, natural sinkholes that offer a refreshing opportunity for swimming and exploration. This proximity to natural wonders adds another layer to the resort's appeal, providing a break from the typical beach and pool activities.
