Sargassum Strategy

While Puerto Morelos beaches are generally cleaner than some neighbors, sargassum can be an issue. Many beach clubs and local efforts work to mitigate it, and the town's barrier helps. Check recent conditions before you go.

Reviews Summary

Puerto Morelos is praised for its charming, laid-back atmosphere and excellent seafood. Visitors appreciate the town's safety, cleanliness, and welcoming vibe, making it a great alternative to busier resorts. However, some note that the beaches can be less turquoise than expected and sargassum can occasionally be present, though efforts are made to mitigate it.

"Decent beach. Wish it had been less windy because the water looked like it could be clear. There is sargassum but the barrier they have in the ocean helps cut some out. They clean up the beach so it's not terrible. Too bad so many boats are in the water where you'd want to swim unless you're in front of a beach club."

Steph Couvrette

"Puerto Morelos is a thriving beach town with excellent restaurants. Live quality entertainment is available at many of the local establishments. The town is very safe and the beaches are cleaned daily. Taxi service and public transportation are really available."

Michael Fischer

"Amazing village! Quiet, chilled vibe, a little touristy but not excessively as we’ve seen before.
People are welcoming, food is good, you can walk everywhere and the prices are ok for Riviera Maya.
It’s clean and taken care off and it feels very safe at anytime of the day.
Beach is not turquoise blue as seen in other pictures, it’s green.
We caught a lot of zargazo (seaweed), I believe it is not typical for this time of the year, but it doesn’t ruin your experience."
