What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Playa La India is a stunningly beautiful bay with calm, clear waters and smooth sand, perfect for swimming and snorkeling. While accessible only by boat, it can get very crowded with large tour groups, impacting the natural experience. Visitors recommend choosing smaller tours or private charters to better appreciate its charm and protect the delicate coral reef.
"If you take the boat tour make sure to stop here! The waves are calm and the sand is smooth."

"This review is specifically for snorkelling at Playa La India. While there is a relatively healthy coral reef here, I was disappointed with the limited marine life on the reef, especially inside a national marine park. It can also get extremely crowded, with literally hundreds of snorkelers at the same time. The big catamaran operators seem to really like it here. The snorkelling at Playa Maguey is much better and significantly less crowded. Even Bahía Tangolunda with all its resorts has better marine life, despite the lack of coral."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
Navigating to Playa La India
When choosing a tour, consider the size of the boat and the number of people. While large catamarans offer a lively atmosphere and often include food and drinks, they can lead to crowded conditions at the beach. Smaller boats and private charters provide a more tranquil experience, allowing for better enjoyment of the natural surroundings and easier access for snorkeling. It's advisable to book your boat tour or rental in advance, especially during peak travel seasons, to ensure availability and secure your preferred option.
Remember that Playa La India is located within the Huatulco National Park. While there isn't a separate entrance fee for the beach itself, the park often has an entrance fee, which is usually incorporated into the price of organized tours. Always confirm what is included in your tour package, such as snorkeling equipment, food, and drinks, to make the most of your journey to this stunning coastal gem.
Snorkeling and Marine Life
However, it's important to be aware of the impact of tourism on this delicate ecosystem. Due to its popularity, Playa La India can become quite crowded, especially when large tour boats anchor nearby. Visitors have noted that the sheer number of snorkelers can sometimes detract from the experience and potentially stress the reef. To help preserve this natural wonder, it's crucial to practice responsible snorkeling: avoid touching or stepping on the coral, do not feed the fish, and take all your trash with you.
For those seeking a less crowded snorkeling experience with potentially more abundant marine life, some visitors suggest exploring other nearby bays like Playa Maguey or even the waters around Bahía Tangolunda. Nevertheless, Playa La India remains a fantastic destination for a first-time snorkeling experience in Huatulco, offering a beautiful glimpse into the underwater world.
Protecting Playa La India's Beauty
Visitors have expressed concern about the environmental impact of numerous large boats anchoring in the bay and the potential for damage to the coral reef from careless visitors. The advice from seasoned travelers and locals is clear: choose smaller tour operators or private charters to minimize your footprint. This not only provides a more intimate experience but also reduces the strain on the environment.
When you visit, remember to leave no trace. Pack out everything you pack in, including all trash. By being mindful of your actions and supporting sustainable tourism practices, you can help ensure that Playa La India remains a breathtaking destination for generations to come.
