What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Hacienda Temozón Sur offers a unique historical experience with incredibly warm and hospitable staff, but recent reviews suggest it's in need of significant investment to meet luxury standards. While the architecture and ambiance are praised, some guests found rooms uncomfortable and facilities like the pool needing attention.
"A beautiful property with wonderful staff — but in urgent need of investment
This is a tricky review to write because the hacienda itself is undeniably impressive and the staff is genuinely warm, welcoming, and eager to help. I want to thank them sincerely for their hospitality and for doing their best to accommodate us.
That said, my experience was far removed from the glowing reviews I had read, to the point where I questioned whether many of those commenters had actually stayed overnight. At $500 per night — in a remote location — Hacienda Temozón simply does not meet the standard one would expect.
The rooms are spacious and architecturally beautiful, but uncomfortable, with no views at all (windows are placed about two meters high). There is no peaceful place to truly relax. The swimming pool, while photogenic, was not clean, and service was overstretched — one staff member had to carry all four requested towels and sunbed cushions alone, which took about 20 minutes.
Most disappointing was the dinner, which we had to send back entirely — a first for me in decades of frequent travel (30–40 hotels a year). We are not particularly demanding diners, but the food was simply inedible.
We had booked three nights but checked out after one, leaving early the next morning with a genuine sense of waste.
IHG has recently taken over, and my advice is clear: either invest significantly to bring the property up to true luxury standards, or reposition it as an “authentic charm” hotel at a much lower price point for guests willing to trade comfort for rustic character. There is no middle ground if Temozón is to become a true “must-stay” destination.
To the staff — you are the best part of this property, and I wish you every success."

"To say this place is magical would be an understatement. It's one of those rare destinations you absolutely must experience in your lifetime. Staying here feels like stepping back into the 19th century—surrounded by historic charm, yet thoughtfully enhanced with modern comforts that make the experience truly exceptional.
This landmark property is run by warm, welcoming locals who make you feel like part of their community, even if just for a short while. It’s also one of the safest places I’ve stayed in Mexico, which added even more peace of mind.
The staff is incredibly friendly, and the rooms are enormous—ours was at least 1,000 square feet, complete with an outdoor jacuzzi. The high ceilings, vintage decor, and attention to detail made the space feel grand and cozy at the same time. Service-wise, it rivals top-tier hospitality brands like the Ritz-Carlton, Six Senses, Regent, and Kimpton. The gourmet food was beautifully presented and perfectly priced.
Overall, it fulfilled my dream of what staying at a Mexican hacienda should be.
A couple of suggestions that could elevate the experience even further: adding a wooden path would make the grounds more accessible for elderly guests and help staff move more efficiently. Also, it would be amazing to have access to the two cenotes on the property—they would be unforgettable additions to an already incredible stay.
Some of the standout staff who made our stay truly exceptional were Rudy, our attentive waiter; Cindy, the wonderful front desk receptionist; and Neidi, the hotel’s longest-serving employee, whose warmth and experience truly shined."

When visiting cenotes, it's important to be mindful of the environment.
