What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Museo Carlos Pellicer for its free admission and fascinating collection of archaeological artifacts from ancient Mexican cultures, as well as its connection to the poet Carlos Pellicer. The modern art room is also a pleasant surprise. However, some note limited accessibility on upper floors and the need for cash payments.
"Free museum with great history about the building and use of the building. Downstairs is wheelchair accessible but not upstairs. Had a very interesting modern art room which was very interesting. Would definitely recommend."
Idris Jenkins
"The Museo de Arte Prehispánico Carlos Pellicer in Tepoztlán is a delightful surprise, showcasing a rich collection of archaeological artifacts. This museum houses over 1,000 pieces of pre-Hispanic art from various cultures, including Maya, Totonaca, Mexica, Teotihuacana, Zapoteca, and Olmeca. The collection was donated by the renowned Tabascan poet Carlos Pellicer Cámara.
Despite its modest size, the museum offers a diverse array of ceramics, stone carvings, and even a stone ring used in the ancient Mesoamerican ballgame. Notably, there are lively and vibrant human and animal figures, though the exhibits lack informative descriptions.
The museum is located behind the Dominican church in Tepoztlán. Admission is 15 pesos, payable in cash only. Given the limited number of attractions in the area, this museum is well worth a visit for those interested in pre-Hispanic cultures."

"This was an unexpected highlight of our trip through Tepotzlan. I love history and the artifacts were fascinating to look at. An older gentleman struck up a conversation with me and he presented a lot of knowledge that was helpful for me to understand a lot of the items...free education 🤙🏼"
