Visitors consistently praise the Crmnica Wine Route for its authentic, family-run wineries and the exceptional quality of its wines, particularly Vranac and Marselan. The warm hospitality and stunning views of Lake Skadar are frequently highlighted as major draws. Some travelers note that navigating the winding roads can be challenging, and booking tastings in advance is essential for smaller producers.
"We were on our way to another winery, and found BUK on our way. I'm so glad we stopped there before.
The wine was so good and we had such a great experience that we didn't go to second winery. We only bought two bottles due to limited space but we will definitely go back for more.
The owner was busy at the time and her mom made us the tasting. She was lovely!
Muchas gracias!"

"Very nice place with beautiful views. Very friendly owner speaking decent English. Tasting is just 5 EUR And you can try all wines including premium white and premium red marselan, which is really good. Father of present winemaker has university diploma for wine making technology from Novi Sad, so winemaking here has solid background, not only tradition but also HEI knowledge."

"Three months ago we did a wine tasting at BUK Winery. We enjoyed the hospitality of Milosh, his great knowledge and the tasty foods made the experience complete. One of the wines we bought, the rosé, we opened today and it really is the best rosé we ever had. We look forward to the other wines we bought! Superb winery, we wish Milosh all
the best!"

Frequently Asked Questions
🚇 🗺️ Getting There
The Crmnica Wine Route is best accessed by car. It's about a 45-minute drive from Podgorica or a similar distance from Budva. The route itself is a network of smaller roads connecting villages like Virpazar and Godinje. Consider using GPS or a local map, as signage can be inconsistent. Many visitors opt for guided tours or private drivers for ease of navigation and to fully enjoy wine tastings.
Public transport to the Crmnica region is limited. Buses run to larger towns like Virpazar, but getting between wineries from there would be challenging without a car or pre-arranged transport. It's highly recommended to have your own vehicle or arrange a taxi/driver for the day.
While some villages might have a few wineries within walking distance, the Crmnica Wine Route is spread out. Walking between most wineries is not practical due to the distances and hilly terrain. A car or organized tour is the most efficient way to explore.
The most popular and recommended way to navigate is by car, either your own or a rental. Alternatively, hiring a local driver or joining a guided wine tour offers a stress-free experience, allowing you to focus on the wine and scenery.
There isn't one single designated 'road' for the entire route. It's more of a collection of villages and individual wineries. Key villages to aim for include Virpazar, Godinje, and various smaller hamlets where wineries are located. Exploring the area around Lake Skadar will naturally lead you to many of them.
🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
There's no single ticket for the entire Crmnica Wine Route. Entry to the region is free. However, individual wineries charge for wine tastings, which typically range from 5-15 EUR per person, often including some local snacks. Booking tastings in advance is highly recommended.
Wine tasting prices vary by winery, but expect to pay around 5 EUR for a basic tasting at places like BUK Winery, which can include several wines and sometimes light snacks. More premium tastings or those with extensive food pairings might cost more.
While some larger or more established wineries might accommodate walk-ins, it's best practice to book your wine tasting in advance, especially for smaller, family-run operations like BUK. This ensures they can prepare for your visit and offer a personalized experience.
A typical wine tasting in Crmnica includes sampling several of the winery's wines, often focusing on their signature varietals like Vranac and Marselan, as well as whites and rosés. Many tastings also come with small platters of local cheeses, cured meats, and bread.
No, there are no entrance fees for the villages themselves. The costs are associated with the wine tastings and any food you choose to purchase at the individual wineries.
🎫 🍇 Wine & Tastings
Crmnica is renowned for its indigenous red grape, Vranac, which is a must-try. Also, look out for Marselan, a rare grape that produces excellent wines, and the local Krstač for a crisp white. Many visitors also praise the rosés from the region.
BUK Winery is consistently praised for its exceptional wines, friendly owner, and beautiful views. Other family-run wineries offer unique experiences, so exploring and discovering hidden gems is part of the charm. Researching specific wineries based on your preferences is a good idea.
Absolutely! Purchasing wine directly from the wineries is a highlight of the experience. Many visitors buy multiple bottles to take home, so be prepared to stock up on your favorites.
Expect to be served local specialties such as cheeses, cured meats (pršut), olives, and fresh bread. These pairings are designed to complement the wines and showcase the region's culinary traditions.
Many smaller wineries are happy to accommodate special requests or tailor tastings to your preferences if you communicate with them in advance. This is part of the personalized service offered by these family businesses.
📸 📸 Photography
The most iconic photo opportunities are the panoramic views overlooking Lake Skadar, especially from the higher-lying wineries. The vineyards themselves, with their rolling hills, also make for stunning shots. Don't forget to capture the rustic charm of the villages and the intimate winery settings.
The golden hours – shortly after sunrise and before sunset – offer the most beautiful light for photography, casting a warm glow over the vineyards and the lake. Midday can be harsh, but offers clear views.
Drone regulations can be complex and vary by location within Montenegro. It's advisable to check current drone laws and obtain any necessary permits before flying. Respect private property and local regulations.
A wide-angle lens is great for capturing the expansive landscapes of Lake Skadar and the vineyards. A telephoto lens can be useful for isolating details in the scenery or capturing distant villages. A tripod is helpful for low-light photography during golden hours.
Generally, yes, but it's always polite to ask the winery staff first, especially if you're photographing their private cellars or equipment. Many winemakers are happy to have their craft showcased.
