Reviews Summary

Ostrog Monastery is widely praised for its breathtaking architecture carved into a cliff face and its profound spiritual atmosphere. Visitors are captivated by the spectacular mountain views and the sacredness of the site. However, some find the steep climbs challenging, and the strict dress code requires preparation.

"Beautiful and very historic monastery located in the mountains of Montenegro. Wanted to visit this place for several years and finally made it. Long drive if you take local routes, would recommend taking the highway direct with a short local drive. Try to park in the upper parking lot, we found spaces, much shorter walk uphill. Wear very stable and comfortable shoes as the rock is uneven and you have to hike up. They have clean bathrooms and water readily available at the monastery. Remember to modestly in pants, long skirts, and cover your shoulders. The monastery experience was beautiful, views are spectacular. They have nice religious items for sale, and lemonade. Good idea, ID to go during the week as crowds are much less and makes for a great experience. Would highly recommend this for any visitor."

"If you are here as a pilgrim, I can see that it will give you a whole different experience than if you are here only for tourism. The road between lower and upper monastery (the one carved into the mountain) is closed for us mortals. It is only for officials and VIP - however, some motorcycles can go up and also buses. The stairs from parking to the upper monastery are steep and can be challenging, especially in 40+ degree centigrade.

You have to dress appropriately to get in the monastery area, they provide cover for those who have shorts on. But ladies don't have to cover their head.

It is not allowed to take pictures in the monastery itself, but I guess you can take them when you reach the top as everyone is doing it. There is a prayer chamber when you go to the end of the path from the entrance. If you are not pilgrim, I suggest you skip this and go to the first door to the left where they have a gift shop instead. There are stairs to the top from here.

The prayer chamber is where the saint body is, and people stand in line to pray to him. There is also a priest inside that will bless you. We have zero idea about this, and I have to pretend to pray to show respect. But, as I said, skip this and give way to the pilgrim to do their thing instead if you are only visiting for tourism."

"This is incredible and breathtaking place. While you drive up to the rocks you do t see monastery at all - you will see it as you arrive your destination. This place is so different and sacred and you feel like Holy Ghost is near you, at least I felt very special and unique there don’t know why. This place has something it is magical"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Miraculous Architecture of Ostrog

Ostrog Monastery is a testament to human ingenuity and faith, with its most striking feature being the upper monastery carved directly into a nearly vertical cliff face. This architectural marvel, dating back to the 17th century, appears to emerge organically from the rock. The construction involved incredible effort to create chambers and chapels within the natural caves and overhangs of the mountain. The sheer scale and the seemingly impossible placement of the monastery are awe-inspiring, making it a unique pilgrimage site.

The monastery complex is divided into two main parts: the lower and upper monasteries. The lower monastery houses churches, accommodation for pilgrims, and administrative buildings. The upper monastery, however, is the spiritual heart, containing the relics of Saint Basil of Ostrog. Visitors often marvel at how such a significant religious structure could be built in such a remote and challenging location, a feat that has captivated pilgrims and tourists for centuries. The integration of the man-made structures with the natural rock formations creates a powerful and unforgettable visual experience. Reddit
