Reviews Summary

Kotor Old Town is lauded for its stunning medieval architecture, breathtaking bay views, and the rewarding hike to the fortress. Visitors love getting lost in its charming streets and enjoying the vibrant evening atmosphere. Some find the fortress entrance fee steep and the hike challenging, suggesting alternative routes or focusing on the town's ambiance.

"Old Town Road in Kotor is more than just a path—it’s a journey through centuries of history and jaw-dropping scenery. We hiked the full trail, and it was one of the highlights of our trip. The stone steps wind up the mountain, offering panoramic views of the bay, the rooftops of Old Town, and the dramatic cliffs surrounding the city.

💡 Tip: If you start your hike from the Ladder of Kotor, you can actually enter the fortress area from above without paying the usual €15 fee. It’s a bit of a hidden route, but totally worth it if you're up for the adventure.

The trail itself is peaceful and less crowded than the main entrance, with plenty of spots to rest and snap photos. Whether you're a history lover, a nature enthusiast, or just looking for a budget-friendly way to explore Kotor, this road delivers."

"loved the view - but 15 € entrance fee isn't worth it... yeah the fortress ruins are nice and there' acute church on the way... but the path is mostly unpaved or slippery... better drive to the serpentines to Cekanje for a similar view"

Skolopender

"15 euros collected if you come up the “traditional” way out from old town. “Cash only”. The views are great the steps are smooth and trail isn’t well maintained. The fort is essentially in ruins without a map. I’d really recommend you just go on the route behind the old hydro plant and skip the charge and enjoy the views that way I’d use that trail to hike to the top and have a picnic and skip the whole church and fort as they aren’t so interesting or maintained. Wear appropriate shoes and bring a hat and water"

The Iconic Kotor Fortress Hike

The climb to the San Giovanni Fortress (also known as St. John's Fortress) is a quintessential Kotor experience. This isn't a casual stroll; it's a challenging hike up approximately 1,350 stone steps, winding along the city walls that cling to the mountainside. The ascent can take anywhere from 45 minutes to over an hour, depending on your fitness level and how often you stop to admire the increasingly spectacular views. The path is rugged, and proper footwear is essential. Reddit

Many visitors opt to pay the entrance fee of around €15 to access the fortress via the main path from the Old Town. However, some travelers have discovered alternative routes, such as starting from the 'Ladder of Kotor' or near the old hydro plant, which can offer a different perspective and potentially bypass the fee. Regardless of the route, the panoramic vistas of the Bay of Kotor, the terracotta rooftops of the Kotor Old Town, and the surrounding dramatic cliffs are the ultimate reward. Reddit

Pro-tip: If you plan to hike during the summer months, start very early in the morning (think 7 AM) to avoid the intense midday sun and heat. Bring ample water, wear a hat, and be prepared to sweat! Vendors selling cold drinks appear further up the trail, which can be a welcome sight. Reddit
