Beat the Crowds

Mala Plaža is Ulcinj's main city beach, meaning it gets incredibly crowded, especially in peak summer. For a more relaxed experience, aim for early mornings or late afternoons. Consider visiting outside of July and August if you prefer fewer people.

Water Quality & Activities

While convenient, Mala Plaža can suffer from water quality issues and noise from jet skis. If pristine waters and tranquility are your priority, explore nearby Velika Plaža or Utjeha. However, for a quick dip and vibrant atmosphere, it's a good option.

Reviews Summary

Mala Plaža is a convenient city beach with stunning Old Town views and calm waters suitable for families. However, it's notorious for extreme crowds in summer, and some visitors report issues with water cleanliness and noise from jet skis. While great for a quick dip and vibrant atmosphere, those seeking tranquility and pristine conditions might prefer other nearby beaches.

"The water was so dirty I was afraid to swim in it.
Jet skis are everywhere and the beach smells of gasoline, it's not even safe to swim. This beach used to be great, now I don't recommend it to anyone"

Luan Doroci

"Thehe main city beach — and you can tell the second you see it. The location is super central, right under the old town, so it’s easy to get to, and there are tons of cafés, restaurants, and bars just steps away.

But here’s the reality: in summer, it’s packed. Like, shoulder-to-shoulder packed — finding a free spot for your towel can be a challenge. And with that many people, there’s also a lot of trash around: cigarette butts in the sand, plastic cups, bottles. The city cleans it, but the crowds keep making a mess.

The water itself can be nice and calm, good for kids, and the view of the old town is amazing, especially at sunset. But if you’re looking for a peaceful, clean beach day, this probably isn’t the spot.

Great for a quick swim or to grab a drink by the water, but if you want space and clean sand — head to one of the bigger beaches outside the city."

One Friday

"The beach was disappointing — dirty sand and an uncomfortable atmosphere with men constantly staring at women. A beach set with an umbrella costs 20€ for the whole day, which feels overpriced. There’s a toilet on the left side that costs 1€ to enter (like a chicken coop), and another on the right side for 0.50€, though we didn’t try it."

Exploring Ulcinj's Beaches: Mala Plaža vs. Velika Plaža

Mala Plaža, the main city beach, offers unparalleled convenience with its central location right below the historic Old Town. It's a bustling hub with numerous cafes and restaurants just steps away, making it ideal for a quick swim or a lively atmosphere. The shallow, calm waters are often cited as a plus for families with young children. However, its popularity means it can get extremely crowded, and some visitors have noted concerns about water cleanliness and noise from jet skis. TikTokReddit

For those seeking a more expansive and potentially less crowded beach experience, Velika Plaža (Big Beach) is the go-to. Stretching for kilometers, it offers more space to spread out and is renowned for its sandy shores. It's also a popular spot for water sports like kite surfing and windsurfing due to its more open exposure to the elements. While it lacks the immediate urban convenience of Mala Plaža, it provides a more traditional beach resort feel. TikTok+1

Recommendation: If you prioritize proximity to amenities and city views, Mala Plaža is your spot. If you're looking for vast sandy stretches, water sports, and a more laid-back beach vibe, head to Velika Plaža. Many visitors find value in experiencing both during their stay in Ulcinj. Reddit

For those staying in the city center, Mala Plaža is easily accessible on foot, as are many restaurants and shops. This is the most convenient way to experience the immediate urban beach area. Instagram+1

When it comes to exploring further afield, such as to Velika Plaža or nearby towns like Utjeha, renting a car is a popular choice. It provides the most flexibility and allows you to stop at various viewpoints and smaller coves along the coast. However, be prepared for narrow roads, potentially challenging parking in popular areas, and traffic congestion during peak season. Reddit

Public transport, primarily buses, connects Ulcinj to other Montenegrin cities and can be a budget-friendly option. Within Ulcinj, local taxis are readily available and can be a good alternative to driving yourself, especially if you plan on enjoying local beverages. For shorter distances, especially along the coast, cycling can also be a pleasant way to get around, offering scenic routes and a chance to enjoy the fresh air. Instagram+1
