What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Spuž Fortress for its stunning panoramic views and well-preserved historical architecture, noting its strategic significance. However, the challenging, steep climb and the presence of snakes in warmer months are frequently mentioned drawbacks. The potential for restoration to enhance its tourist appeal is also a recurring theme.
"To climb this fort, you must find the only path leading to it, otherwise you may not be able to. The path is located on the south west. Hill Spuska Glavica rises in the middle of the Bjelopavlicka Plain, it is passionately steep and inaccessible, so the very fortress itself was unbreakable. if you plan to visit the fortress in summer, take goid care, because there are many snakes, when I was out in November, I saw five.
From a height of about 100 meters everything can be seen in the palm of your hand. In the west there is Maljat Hill, from which a white stone is used. Three kilometers to the northwest is Martinićka Gradina, to the north Piperi. From the fortress you have a great view of river Zeta, the litle town Spuz, Danilovgrad, Velje (hill) brdo, Bjelopavlici...
The notorious fortress was built by Hodaverdi Pasha according to the Sultan's order at the top of the Spuska Glavica. The building was completed in 1704. It had 24 towers, some of which exist today. The Spuž fort is a fortification masterpiece. Her unknown architect has obviously carefully examined the steep hill configuration, which has the only approach from the southwest side. That's why the path was on that side. That is why it is also the main entrance to the fort from the west, with the approach protected so skilfully and made so unfavorable for the attackers that it was impossible to think about conquest from the region.
The defense of the Spuž fortress was contributed by the whole system of smaller fortifications, fortresses and towers. Five tower fortresses built Derviš-paša in 1862.
It was a powerful fortification system, but the Montenegrin army was still overpowering. It all collapsed in the Great War of 1876-78. The Spuž Fortress was a symbol of Turkish power and a "wedge" between Montenegro and Hills."

"If a very old and historic castle is opened to tourism, Spuž and the people of Montenegro will benefit. With the necessary restoration and lighting, it will become a magnificent site. It's a prime candidate for a tour stop."

"Not much remains from the Turkish era, but there is and will always be a nice view from the Spuž glavica of the Spuž and the Zeta River and a good part of Bjelopavlić."

The Strategic Importance of Spuž Fortress
Beyond the main fortress, a system of smaller fortifications, including five tower fortresses built by Derviš-paša in 1862, further bolstered its defenses. This powerful fortification system was a symbol of Turkish power and served as a strategic 'wedge' between Montenegro and the surrounding hills. Despite its strength, it eventually fell to the Montenegrin army during the Great War of 1876-78.
Today, while much of the Turkish-era structures have diminished, the fortress remains a significant historical site. Its well-preserved core and commanding position offer a glimpse into its past military importance and provide visitors with a profound sense of history.
Navigating the Ascent and Safety
Safety is a key consideration, especially during warmer months. Travelers have reported encountering numerous snakes on the hill during summer visits. It is recommended to be vigilant, wear appropriate clothing, and perhaps consider visiting during cooler periods like November, when snake sightings are less common.
While the climb is demanding, the reward is immense. The panoramic views from the summit are spectacular, offering a sweeping vista of the Zeta River, the town of Spuž, and the Bjelopavlići plain. Planning your visit during daylight hours is crucial for both navigation and safety.
