Volubilis, an ancient roman city. It's founded in the 3rd century B.C., became an important outpost of the Roman Empire and was graced with many fine buildings. Extensive remains of these survive in the archaeological site, located in a fertile agricultural area. Volubilis was later briefly to become the capital of Idris I, founder of the Idrisid dynasty, who is buried at nearby Moulay Idris. #vol...

Reviews Summary

Volubilis is widely praised as a must-visit for its remarkably preserved Roman ruins and stunning mosaics, offering a tangible connection to ancient history. Visitors appreciate the freedom to explore the vast site at their own pace, though many recommend hiring a guide to fully grasp its significance. Some note that the site could benefit from better maintenance and signage.

"These Roman ruins date from the first century BC although the settlement existed before then. If you hire a guide, they will relate the story of the various empires, including Idris I, their abandonment, the English ambassador who sketched them which allowed their reconstruction after a devastating earthquake in the 1700s. There's a charming outdoor restaurant here, a coffee and drinks stand, washrooms, lots of parking. The cost of the guides will vary according to the season, 100-300. We were charged MAD 250 for our group of four but you can also just look around by yourself."

"The Roman ruins in Volubilis were far better preserved than I expected, and it truly felt like stepping back in time. It was amazing to imagine what life might have looked like during that era.

If you don’t book a guide in advance, you can easily hire one at the entrance. Since the site doesn’t have standing buildings like other archaeological sites, I highly recommend going with a guide to really understand what you’re seeing.

We wandered around, imagined the ancient scenes, and had such a fun and memorable experience exploring this incredible place."
