"Amazing wood artisan shop in the heart of the Medina, offering a great and wide selection of wooden pieces. They offer discount and display the items that are on sale in front of the shop. The items vary from furniture to kitchenware, storage boxes up until pure decor pieces. Definitely worth the visit, also the owners are so sweet."

"If I could give this shop 6 stars, I would. This was one of the highlights of our visit to Essaouira. This shop is located in the city, lots of store! Though you can easily find this store. Lots of wood work, from tables, boxes, chairs and a lot more. They also demonstrate to you how they make their unique products, accentuated with pearls, aluminium, another type of wood and a lot more. Photos won't do justice. It’s better to check them personally. I was able to buy their magic box 😁 A great find!"

"Fantastic place - a small warehouse filled with woodwork, probably the largest place in Essaouira. I was determined to buy some thuja items whilst in Essaouira, and must have gone in three times at least - there was absolutely no pressure to buy anything, each visit I was probably just browsing for 20-30 mins, and no-one bothered me.
They were also kind enough to dig out some items from a backroom when I asked if they had any other designs. I ended up buying a large tray, a few boxes, and a lovely rehal - all of which I was miraculously able to fit into hand luggage.
I'm sure I could have probably have found similar items for less elsewhere after a bit of haggling, but I've never been much good at it and they were still a hell of a lot cheaper than I would have paid outside Essaouira! Would definitely recommend a visit!"

The Art of Thuja Woodworking
Visitors can witness firsthand the transformation of raw thuja logs into intricate works of art. From the initial sawing and shaping to the delicate inlay work using materials like mother-of-pearl, brass, or other contrasting woods, each step requires immense skill and patience. The workshops often showcase a variety of items, demonstrating the versatility of thuja wood, from functional kitchenware and furniture to purely decorative objects that serve as beautiful souvenirs. The sensory experience of the fragrant wood combined with the visual artistry makes this a truly memorable stop.
Many reviews highlight the authenticity and quality of the craftsmanship. Unlike mass-produced souvenirs, the items here are handcrafted with attention to detail. The artisans are often happy to explain their process, offering a deeper appreciation for the labor and artistry involved. This direct connection to the craft makes purchasing a piece from the Thuya Workshops a more meaningful experience, bringing a tangible piece of Moroccan heritage home with you.
Navigating the Medina and Finding Treasures
Finding the workshops is part of the experience. While they are a well-known establishment, the Medina's layout can be disorienting for first-time visitors. Don't hesitate to ask locals for directions; they are generally helpful and accustomed to guiding tourists. Look for signs or simply follow the flow of people towards the artisan areas. The workshops are often described as a large space filled with woodwork, making them a distinct landmark once you're close.
Once inside, the shopping experience is often highlighted for its relaxed atmosphere. Unlike some more aggressive souk vendors, the staff at the Thuya Workshops are known for their patience, allowing visitors to browse freely without pressure. This makes it an ideal place to find unique souvenirs, from small, easily transportable boxes to larger furniture pieces, often at competitive prices, especially if you find items in their sale section.
