Reviews Summary

Souk Smata offers a vast array of goods, from leather to spices, with many visitors enjoying the vibrant atmosphere and the thrill of bargaining. However, some shoppers have encountered pushy vendors and inflated prices, leading to mixed experiences. Despite these challenges, many find it a more organized and pleasant souk experience compared to others in Morocco. Reddit+1

"So this souk is massive and has such a variety of shops. I’m generously rating it 2 stars. Shopkeepers have been very rude in our experience, I thought bartering was part of their culture however as we are from the uk “uk people are rich” insinuating we shouldn’t barter. I mean some shopkeepers really gave silly prices. At one point a shopkeeper tried selling my family member something for £40 when I have already done my research I know it’s not even worth 1/4 of that price I said to her it’s too much don’t get it we will look around. He began swearing at me and arguing. He constantly swore in his own language until I walked off."

"I had a better experience there than in Fes—fewer people begging for money, fewer people following you around and being annoying. It felt more organized, safer, and overall nicer.

The downsides are the people exploiting monkeys and snakes, and the thousands of motorcycles driving through the souk, sometimes even crashing into people."

Caroline Vieira

"I enjoyed walking along the streets, very interesting to see and to smell everything. But they are a bit crowded and you need to be watchful of the motorbikes. I felt safe walking alone but I think later in the evening there are some streets which are very empty of people and I think you need to be a bit more cautious. The people are very friendly. They are not too pushy, of course they want to sell products and make some money but they are not over pushy and they are very polite. Always negotiate the price. Most shops are authentic but there are some selling “genuine fakes”. I recommend you visit if in Marrakesh"
