What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Taznakht for its authentic Berber carpets and the genuine hospitality of its people. The opportunity to support local artisans directly through cooperatives is a major draw, with many leaving happy with their purchases and the cultural immersion. Some may find the shopping experience intense, but the overall sentiment is overwhelmingly positive.
"We bought 2 big carpets there and we are very happy finding them. Seems to be a cooperative where quite a few lokal Berber families sell their hand-woven carpets in a bigger shop and get their share when sold. We were brought there from a surrounding little shop after being shown how to manufacture a real carpet. We had the feeling being at the very place where to get a good quality carpet and be sure the lokal families benefit the most.
The Berber vendor in the shop was welcoming and discreet without talking you into something. He served tea and since it was Friday at lunch time we sat down and ate some couscous with him and the others.
The carpets are still on our car roof but I’m sure it was a good decision buying them there. Great recommendation."

We got insights into the production of carpets and even were invited to knot by our own. The produced carpets are wonderful and have unique patterns."

The Art of Berber Carpet Making
The knotting process is where the magic truly happens. Primarily women in the cooperatives are skilled weavers, using traditional looms to create complex designs. Each knot is tied by hand, a labor-intensive task that can take weeks or months to complete a single carpet, depending on its size and intricacy. Visitors often have the chance to witness this firsthand, gaining a deep appreciation for the skill and dedication involved.
When purchasing a carpet, understanding the different tribal patterns and their meanings can add another layer of appreciation. From geometric motifs to symbolic representations, each design holds cultural significance. Merchants are usually eager to share these stories, making the buying experience more than just a transaction, but an educational journey into Berber heritage.
Navigating the Cooperative Experience
Don't be surprised if you're invited to see the carpet-making process up close. This is often a demonstration where artisans will show you how the wool is prepared, dyed, and then meticulously knotted onto the loom. Some cooperatives even allow visitors to try knotting a few stitches, offering a hands-on experience of this ancient craft. This direct interaction provides invaluable insight into the skill and effort behind each rug.
While shopping is the primary goal for many, the experience is as much about the cultural exchange as it is about the purchase. The merchants are typically patient, allowing you to browse extensively without pressure. They are knowledgeable about their products and happy to explain the origins, materials, and symbolism of the carpets. This approach fosters a genuine connection and makes the decision to purchase feel more personal and meaningful.
