What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Maputo Special Reserve for its accessibility and the thrill of seeing diverse wildlife like elephants and giraffes, making it a worthwhile safari option for those short on time. The scenic beauty and coastal proximity are also highlights. However, the necessity of a 4x4 vehicle and potentially slow, bumpy roads can be a challenge for some.
"It was excellent. If you are short on time but wish to experience a safari, this location is a worthwhile option. It's only an hour from Maputo, and the tour allows approximately three to four hours of wildlife viewing. We saw elephant families, giraffes, buffalo, and impala herds. My children were thrilled, and my husband and I were equally delighted.
A 4×4 vehicle is needed. The main road is relatively good, allowing access for smaller SUVs to a certain point. However, exploring more remote areas, such as hippo habitats, may require a 4×4 vehicle.
For a quick day trip, I wholeheartedly recommend this place."

"It is one the easiest safari park to visit from Maputo, and a good one for beginners like us. Do not purchase the safari package from Maputo advertised in the website, it is super expensive and nothing special (at least in this park for a short visit). If you have a car, just use your own, but it must be a 4×4. It take just one hour from Maputo, but be warned, once you enter the park the drive is 5 miles/hr at best, and extreme bumps. The restaurant/hotel resort is nice to go to have a meal or coffee, where you can enjoy a nice view, but expect a long drive. Plentty of wild animals, likely to meet girafes. Overall, if you are on a business trip and have a day off, it is an acceptable trip to get a flavor. If this is a vacation destination, have more time, and a more complete nature experience, maybe the larger parks, like in SA, is a better choice."

Navigating the Reserve: The 4x4 Imperative
This requirement means that visitors without their own 4x4 will need to consider guided tours or arrange for specialized transfers. While some tours are advertised, be discerning, as one reviewer found them to be 'super expensive and nothing special' for a short visit. If you have the option, using your own 4x4 offers the most flexibility and control over your exploration, allowing you to set your own pace and stop where you please to capture those perfect wildlife moments.
Key takeaway: If you're planning a trip to the Maputo Special Reserve, ensure you have access to a 4x4 vehicle. This will significantly enhance your experience, allowing you to explore more freely and safely within this beautiful natural environment.
Wildlife Encounters: What to Expect
While the reserve is home to elephants, some travelers note that sightings can vary, and the population might not be as dense as in larger, more established parks. However, the thrill of spotting these magnificent creatures in their natural environment remains a highlight for many. Giraffes are also a common and beloved sight, often seen gracefully feeding on acacia trees.
For the best chances of wildlife viewing, plan your visits during the cooler parts of the day, typically early morning and late afternoon. This is when animals are most active, moving to water sources or foraging. The changing scenery as you drive through the park also adds to the experience, making each game drive unique.
Accommodation and Camping Options
Reviewers describe Ponta Membene as a beautiful facility with new amenities, including toilets and shower blocks, as well as braai (barbecue) spaces. There's also a restaurant overlooking the beach, though it may still be under construction or experiencing growing pains. The location provides direct access to the reserve's wildlife and the pristine Mozambican coast, making it ideal for both safari enthusiasts and beach lovers.
Beyond Ponta Membene, other accommodations might be available, catering to different preferences and budgets. Whether you opt for camping under the stars or a comfortable chalet, staying within or close to the reserve allows for a more immersive experience, with opportunities for early morning and late afternoon game drives.
