Reviews Summary

Mulbekh Monastery is lauded for its awe-inspiring 30-foot Maitreya Buddha rock sculpture, a unique and ancient religious site. Visitors appreciate its convenient location on the Srinagar-Leh Highway and the glimpse it offers into Buddhist culture. Some note the small entrance fee and the need for respectful photography, while a few mention interpretations of the statue's symbolism.

"It’s one of the oldest temples with a rock carving Buddha statue in the middle. It’s a small, simple temple, but it’s comfortable. Don’t forget to make a donation when you visit to support the restoration efforts."

catharina jahja

"For those coming from Muslim dominated Kargil and Srinagar, Mulbekh is the first encounter with the Buddhist culture. The Chamba Statue here is a striking enormous figure carved into the rock face on the right hand side of the road. It pictures a standing Maitreya Buddha overlooking the old trade route and modern highway. Some people believe it dates to the Khushan period. Unfortunately, the lower part of the statue is partly obscured by a small temple built in 1975."

Vikas Singh

"Small road side monastery of the rock cut figure. To me this clearly seems to be the figure of Lord Shiva with four arms & holy thread ( janeu) around his shoulder but it's being presented as future Buddha.
I mean this doesn't bother me but it seems it's being misguided at this place.
Still worth visiting and you have to pay the entrance fee of Rs 20 to enter the rock cut temple."
