What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors are consistently amazed by the nightly spectacle of millions of bats emerging from the cave, calling it an incredible and unique experience. The panoramic sunset views from the pagoda viewpoint are also highly praised, despite the steep climb required to reach it. Some note that local efforts to encourage bat flight can feel less natural.
"Went here to watch the sunset. Parked our scooters/mopeds at the bottom and climbed a short but steep stairs to the top of the cliff and sat at the pagoda waiting for dusk.
Each evening the locals bang pots to encourage the colony of bats to fly out of the cave in their thousands!
Unique experience"

"Linno Cave or Bats Cave is located at the verge of Thanlwin River. The cave is named upon the bats living in the cave under the pagoda. The bats are going out at the evening (time is vary) and coming back to the cave at early morning.
Many local people and tourists come to see the bats coming out from the cave at the evening. There is a view point and a pagoda the the top of the cave. It is a little bit steep and not good for kids and children to go to the view point. However, the view is so nice to watch Thanlwin River, sunset and other surroundings."

"An easy hike up to see a beautiful view of the bridge while the sun sets as well as to see the bats fly out from the cave and fly over the bridge to another cave. It was incredible to see the bat formations as they fly together avoiding the birds that try and hunt them. The sunset itself was beautiful but you couldn’t actually see the sun behind the cave. I am not sure if it was the time we went and the bats were not just leaving before dark but there was someone that was beating what sounded like a drum to get the bats to fly out of the cave. This made it seem a little less natural."

The Spectacle of the Bat Exodus
Locals sometimes create noise, like banging pots or drums, to encourage the bats to fly out. While this can make the experience feel less entirely natural to some, it's part of the local tradition and ensures the spectacle happens. Watching the bats navigate the air, sometimes avoiding predators like birds, adds another layer of fascination to the event.
For the best experience, aim to arrive in the late afternoon. This gives you ample time to find a good viewing spot and witness the transition from daylight to the magical emergence of the bats. The flight typically lasts for about 20 minutes, offering a sustained visual feast.
The Pagoda Viewpoint and Sunset
The panoramic views from the pagoda are a significant draw. Visitors can gaze out over the tranquil Thanlwin River, the surrounding verdant landscape, and the picturesque bridge. As the sun begins to dip below the horizon, the sky often transforms into a canvas of vibrant colors, creating a beautiful backdrop for the emerging bats.
While the sunset itself is stunning, the cave's position might mean the sun is partially obscured by the rock formation. Nevertheless, the overall vista, combined with the anticipation of the bat flight, makes the climb and the wait incredibly rewarding. It's a perfect spot for reflection and appreciating the natural beauty of Hpa-An.
