What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently describe Sandwich Harbour as 'absolutely spectacular' and 'unbelievable,' highlighting the breathtaking views where towering dunes meet the ocean. The thrilling 4x4 dune drives and abundant wildlife sightings are major draws. While the experience is overwhelmingly positive, some note that half-day tours are sufficient for most, and booking in advance is crucial.
"Absolutely spectacular - been wanting to visit for ages and so worth it - the views are unbelievable - as they say where the dunes meet the ocean. We were so lucky and also saw dolphin, seals (of course), pelican, Oryx ans Springbok. I would recommend a half day rather than full day trip - 4 or 5 hours is plenty. You have to visit with a licensed tour guide in a 4x4 - no self drive allowed. There are loads of good operators in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. Also avoid peak season European school holidays July August as it gets super busy. Truly one of the Earth’s most beautiful places."

"Sandwich Harbour, located approximately 55 km south of Walvis Bay in Namibia, is a place where the harsh desert meets the Atlantic Ocean in a dramatic display of nature's power. The name "Sandwich Harbour" is believed to have originated from the HMS Sandwich, a British whaling ship that surveyed the area in the late 18th century . Alternatively, some suggest it derives from the German word "sandfisch," meaning sandfish or sand shark .
Historically, the harbour was a bustling site for various industries. In the 19th century, it served as a commercial fishing and trading port, attracting whalers and guano collectors . The presence of fresh water from the Kuiseb River's aquifer made it an attractive location for these activities. However, in 1890, the sand spit protecting the natural bay broke off, making the harbour too shallow for ships to enter, leading to its decline .
Today, Sandwich Harbour is part of the Namib-Naukluft National Park and is recognized as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. The area is renowned for its rich biodiversity, particularly its birdlife, including flamingos, pelicans, and various wader species . The juxtaposition of towering dunes and the ocean creates a unique and picturesque landscape, making it a significant ecological and historical site in Namibia."
