What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Big Daddy Dune for its breathtaking views and the exhilarating experience of climbing and descending. While challenging, the sense of accomplishment and the stunning desert panoramas are highlights. Some find the climb strenuous, and caution is advised for the steep descent.
"Hiking up to the top Big Daddy was exhilarating! Make sure that you step into the tracks of the person in front of you for the easiest hike. Keep your eyes down to see the various different beatles that make the dune their home! Make sure you've got a tie down for your hat, because it does tend to blow on the ridgeline. The jog down the 45° slope to the playa is a blast!"

"Beautiful and scenic hike. It's not as hard as advertised. Simply a must do."

"When you see the dune from the bottom you are surely not so thrilled to climb it in that extreme heat. But it is well worth it. The first half is much much harder than the second and the views from the top are just something else. Absolutely breathtaking. Plus you can get down in like 5 minutes and it is so much fun. Well well worth it to climb all the way to the top when you are there."

The Climb: Strategy and Experience
Pro Tip: Some travelers suggest starting your ascent about 0.5 km to the left of the main, crowded path closest to the parking lot. This can save you time and effort. The views from the top are unparalleled, providing a breathtaking panorama of the Sossusvlei landscape, including the iconic Deadvlei.
The Descent: Thrills and Caution
The descent from Big Daddy Dune is often the most exhilarating part of the experience. Many visitors opt for a straight, steep slide or run down the sandy slopes, which is incredibly fun and fast. This can be a thrilling way to get back to the bottom quickly. However, it's important to be aware that this option can be risky and is not suitable for everyone. Assess your comfort level and proceed with caution. Alternatively, you can walk down more gradually. The contrast between the arduous climb and the swift, joyful descent is a memorable aspect of visiting Big Daddy Dune.
Big Daddy Dune vs. Other Namibian Dunes
Many visitors find Big Daddy to be a more rewarding climb than some of the other famous dunes like Dune 45, which is popular for sunrise but significantly shorter. The sheer scale of Big Daddy offers a more challenging and ultimately more satisfying experience for those seeking a significant physical accomplishment. The ability to see Deadvlei from its summit also adds a unique dimension to the Big Daddy experience, making it a must-do for many exploring the Namib Desert.
