What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors generally enjoy the vibrant atmosphere and the opportunity to connect with local artists at the Spui Art Market. Many appreciate the diverse range of art and the chance to find unique pieces. However, some find the prices to be on the higher side, especially for what they perceive as tourist-oriented items.
"Its a nice market, but i found it to be very overpriced. That is just me, as a tourist looking for a tourist painting of amsterdam thats not too expensive.
-Some are really nice works of art, but way out of my budget but worth the price.
-Some are what i would call over priced, like a small 6" sponge painting that barley resembled a canal, bridge and buildings, was 130 euros, crazy.
-I went here looking for a piece of art to have as souvenir and walked away empty handed. BUT on the corner near by, not part of this art market, was a water colour painter who had amazing paintings of the canals. I got a 18" one for 30 euros and its great."

"The Sunday's art fair on the Amsterdam Spuiplein ("Art Spuiplein") really is a joy when strolling through the city center. It is highly diverse and dynamic, with the artists themselves showing today's endless and unexpected possibilities of art in 2D and 3D. One can find works of art produced by very modern as well as by skilled, traditional techniques. I came across high quality and enjoyed talking with the artists (which hardly occurs in galleries). And each Sunday it varies. A big recommendation!"

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Practical tips for families: Consider visiting earlier in the day to avoid the biggest crowds. Bring snacks or plan for a stop at a nearby cafe, as food options directly at the market are limited. The proximity to bookstores also offers a good backup activity if little ones need a break from art gazing.
💰 Budget Travelers
Tips for finding affordable art: Walk the entire market before purchasing. Don't be afraid to politely inquire about prices or if there are any smaller, more affordable pieces available. Sometimes, artists selling watercolors or smaller canvases offer great value for beautiful pieces. Consider looking for art that resonates with you personally, rather than just a generic tourist item.
🎨 Art Enthusiasts & Collectors
For collectors: This market is ideal for finding unique, one-of-a-kind pieces that you won't find in mass-produced galleries. The ever-changing nature of the market means there's always potential for a new discovery. Engage with the artists, ask about their techniques, and consider investing in a piece that truly speaks to you.

The Spui Art Market Experience
Many visitors appreciate the opportunity to talk directly with the artists, gaining insights into their inspiration and techniques. This personal interaction is a significant draw, making the art acquisition process more meaningful. While some pieces can be pricey, the market also offers more affordable options, making it a great place to find unique souvenirs or a special piece for your home.
It's worth noting that the market's offerings are dynamic and change weekly, meaning each visit can present new discoveries. This unpredictability adds to the charm and encourages repeat visits. The market's location in the city center also makes it easily accessible and combinable with other nearby attractions.
Navigating Art Market Prices and Value
However, the value often lies in the direct connection with the artist and the uniqueness of the piece. Many artists are selling their livelihood, and the prices reflect their skill, time, and materials. If you're looking for a more affordable option, keep an eye out for prints, smaller sketches, or works by emerging artists. Exploring the entire market before making a decision is highly recommended.
Some visitors have found excellent value by looking slightly outside the main market stalls or by seeking out watercolor artists who may offer more accessible price points for beautiful canal scenes. The key is to appreciate the art for what it is and to find a piece that speaks to you within your budget. Remember, these are original artworks created by local talent. :euro:
