What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
De School is lauded as a legendary Amsterdam institution, celebrated for its incredible music, vibrant atmosphere, and innovative restaurant. While many praise the immersive experience and community vibe, some visitors have expressed frustration with long queues, a selective door policy, and strict rules like the confiscation of personal liquids. Despite its closure, its impact on the nightlife and cultural scene is undeniable.
"The best club in Amsterdam. One of the best restaurants in Amsterdam. I will miss this place so much! Always good parties, awesome music, nice people, not very friendly staff, amazing location! They created legendary place."

"This review is about the Restaurant:
Had a lovely evening here. I loved the atmosphere and felt immediately at easy with the kind and welcoming staff.
The candles make the room very warm despite the underground vibe typical of DS.
I appreciated the wine pairing, some very interesting bottles that I had never seen before.
All courses were delicious and interesting, even though maybe some of them a bit less creative than what you normally find in similar venues.
But overall a lovely experience that I'm happy to recommend - try it out before they (sadly) close!"

"Great food, service and wine.
Pictured are some dishes from a 5 course vegan menu. Absolutely delicious and an explosion of flavours."

The De School Legacy: A Cultural Hub
The club, in particular, gained international acclaim for its commitment to electronic music, especially techno and house. It consistently ranked among the world's best clubs, attracting top DJs and a discerning crowd. The strict no-phone policy was a deliberate choice to encourage genuine connection and immersion in the music and atmosphere, a stark contrast to the hyper-documented nature of modern nightlife.
Despite its success, De School faced challenges, including its eventual closure announced for January 2024. The news was met with widespread sadness from its devoted patrons and the global electronic music scene, highlighting its significant impact. The final parties were a testament to its legendary status, drawing crowds for one last unforgettable experience.
Navigating the De School Experience: Tips from the Community
When it comes to safety, particularly for solo female travelers, the consensus from Reddit is that De School is generally safe, but standard clubbing precautions apply. Be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts. A crucial tip from reviews is the no liquids policy, which includes perfumes, leading to confiscations at the door – a point of frustration for some. The restaurant is highly praised for its delicious, often vegan, tasting menus and intimate atmosphere, making it a worthwhile experience even if you're not attending a club night.
Ultimately, De School offers a unique, immersive experience that prioritizes music and community over documentation. Understanding its ethos, preparing for queues, and embracing the 'offline' nature of the club are key to a memorable visit.
