What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Koning Willem-Alexander Bridge to be a functional and accessible crossing with good provisions for cyclists and pedestrians. While not a towering landmark, its historical significance as the former Tram Bridge and its role in modern Breda are appreciated. The river views and evening lighting add to its charm.
"The King Willem-Alexander Bridge
used to be better known as the historic Tram Bridge. The river Mark, the Tramsingel and the Academiesingel meet at the bridge. After the development of the new harbour and the special moorings, it was important that larger boats could also sail under the bridge. In 2014, the bridge was reopened under its new name."

"Hmmm yes… for a King Willem-Alexander bridge it is a bit on the low side… this bridge is not very high. It is that you can see that there is water flowing underneath, but it is a bridge that is lower than many other bridges. It is a wide bridge, with wide lanes. It is also a bridge with a T-junction. If you walk from the center and you take the bridge, then you can also turn left, which is what most cars do, not many cars go straight towards the train station. This bridge has a spacious bicycle path on both the left and the right. When I was there, January 14, the bridge was equipped with lighting on the sides, now I don't know if this is because the municipality is late with removing the decorations from the holidays or because it is always equipped with lighting. I think it is nice in the summer when boats pass under the bridge, when you are standing on the bridge. They will have to be small boats, I don't think large boats will work, they don't fit, and I haven't even considered whether this bridge can open."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
The Bridge's Transformation: From Tram to King
The key upgrade involved increasing the bridge's clearance to allow larger boats to pass under it, a crucial factor for the evolving harbor and mooring facilities. This adaptation ensures the bridge serves both modern transportation needs and the city's connection to its waterways. Visitors can appreciate its dual identity: a functional piece of infrastructure and a nod to its historical roots.
Navigating the Bridge: A User's Perspective
While the bridge is named after a King, some visitors humorously point out its relatively low height, suggesting it might not accommodate very large vessels. However, the experience of watching smaller boats pass underneath can still be enjoyable. The bridge's lighting, whether permanent or seasonal, adds to its appeal during evening hours, creating a pleasant ambiance for those crossing on foot or by bike.
