"Monumental pillar commemorating the defeat of Napoleon and the French republic in 1813. The pillar contains a statue of King Willem II and multiple inscriptions. It is a good place to hang out, either on these steps below or on the park benches around the monument."

"The "Monument Plein 1813" is a plaza in Den Haag. It's not a typical continental plaza with lots of cafes etc. It's literally a monument on a sort of roundabout, but not difficult to cross to get up close. The monument on the roundabout is the Dutch ‘Independence Monument‘ and commemorates several related events that all occurred in 1813. The defeat of Napoleon, the end of French occupation of Netherlands, the introduction of the Dutch constitution and the return of the House of Orange as a constitutional monarchy.
The monument is a square column topped with a allegorical firgure of victory. Just below her are four figures. One of the returning Prince of Orange, Willem I agreeing to the new constitution. Two allegorical figures of Peace and History referencing the freedoms enshrined in the constitution and a sculptural ensemble depicting the individuals who formed the then interim government.
The monument is a little away from the main tourist circuit in Den Haag, but worth a look if you have time."
