Reviews Summary

Project De Nollen is praised for its imposing and organic sculptures set in a unique dune landscape that incorporates WW2 bunkers. Visitors appreciate the artistic vision and the contemplative atmosphere, with the conservatory cafe being a pleasant addition. However, the primary reliance on Dutch-guided tours is a significant drawback for international visitors seeking deeper context.

"I just happened to chance upon this place while googling about how to spend an afternoon before attending a wedding in Den Helder. I’m so glad I came across this absolute gem. I took a guided tour which was predominantly in Dutch so it’s probably worth reading up about this lesser known but impressive artist sculptor designer and gardener who emanates much of Richard Serra’s style

The works are imposing and yet organic. The location is amongst dunes by the Den Helder Zuid station and the conservatory cafe is just worth visiting on its own merit"

Anshul Raja

"The park was a pleasant surprise. Great sculptures in a pleasant landscape. The old bunkers from WW2 make it an exciting place for kids as well."

John Taman

"Breathtaking place. All pieces of art played with colors, music, steam and fire. That place gave me plenty of associations and thoughts during and afterwards observing. Excursion was on Dutch language but after discovering the masterpieces you can grab a drink and check the documental movie with English subtitles inside the cafeteria on a territory."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Art of Robbert van der Horst

Project De Nollen is the brainchild of artist, sculptor, designer, and gardener Robbert van der Horst. His work is characterized by its imposing scale and organic forms, often described as having a style reminiscent of Richard Serra. Van der Horst's creations are not static; they are designed to interact with their environment, utilizing elements like color, music, steam, and fire to create dynamic and thought-provoking experiences. Reddit

The integration of his art into the natural dune landscape is a key aspect of Project De Nollen. The sculptures are placed to engage with the surroundings, creating a dialogue between the man-made and the natural. This approach transforms the park into an open-air gallery where the art and the environment are inseparable. Reddit

Visitors often find the works evoke a wide range of associations and thoughts, making a visit a deeply personal and reflective experience. While the primary language for tours is Dutch, the sheer visual impact of the sculptures can still be profoundly moving, even without full linguistic comprehension. Reddit

A Unique Historical Setting

Beyond the contemporary art, Project De Nollen holds a significant historical layer due to its location within former WW2 bunkers. These structures, remnants of a past conflict, are now integrated into the artistic landscape, adding a unique and sometimes poignant dimension to the visitor experience. Reddit

The presence of these bunkers can make the site particularly engaging for those interested in history or for families looking for a more adventurous outing. They serve as a stark reminder of the area's past, contrasting with the forward-looking artistic expressions. Reddit

This blend of historical architecture and modern sculpture creates a compelling atmosphere. It's a place where art, nature, and history converge, offering a multi-faceted exploration for visitors. The juxtaposition of the imposing bunkers with the fluid forms of Van der Horst's sculptures is a key element that sets Project De Nollen apart. Reddit

Navigating the Experience: Tours and Language

A crucial aspect of visiting Project De Nollen is understanding the role of guided tours. For many visitors, these tours are the primary, and sometimes only, way to gain access to the site and its artworks. Reddit However, a significant point of feedback from international visitors is that these tours are predominantly conducted in Dutch. Reddit

This linguistic barrier can be a challenge for those who do not speak Dutch, as the nuances and artist's intentions might be lost. Some reviews express disappointment that English explanations or audio guides are not readily available, leading to a less immersive experience for non-Dutch speakers. Reddit It is highly recommended for international visitors to check the language of the tours in advance or to do some personal research on the artist and his work before their visit to enhance their appreciation. Reddit

Despite the language challenge, many visitors still find the visual impact of the sculptures to be powerful. The conservatory cafe offers a chance to see a documentary about the artist, which may include English subtitles, providing an alternative avenue for understanding the context of the art. TikTok
