What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Oude Kerk Ede for its beautiful Gothic architecture, striking lamps, and especially its magnificent organ, which provides a powerful sound during services. The church offers a welcoming and orderly worship experience, even for non-religious visitors who appreciate the atmosphere and community. Some find the sermons a bit long, and parking can be a point of contention for some.
"What a beautiful church, beautiful lamps and beautiful windows. Magnificent organ. I went there for a church service.
It was very full, which seems to be often or always the case, so 15 minutes before the service is definitely necessary. You can still choose your preferred seat.
They sing from a different psalm book than the Dutch Reformed churches, but Bibles with psalm books are on a table in the back, which you can borrow.
There's no projector, so we sang along with the organ. Wonderful! And not too fast, I enjoyed it.
In my opinion, the sermon was a bit long (over 35 minutes) compared to today's attention span, and the message might have stuck better with the children if it were shorter, but I heard some wonderful things during the service. And here, the Bible is actually opened, which is precious.
The children are also quite young in the service, which is good to know, and you can bring a coloring book or something. But at least they're learning to sit still here. Respect.
Oh yes, and here the peppermint roll was still passed around. A lovely tradition from my childhood.
The pastor and elders still dress neatly here. The people do too, by the way, but women also wore smart trousers, not necessarily skirts, and some wore (wide) hats. (Which meant I couldn't see the pastor properly 😅. But that's not necessary to hear.)
I saw structure, order, and neatness, which is quite different from the churches I normally visit, which move with the times (read: the world).
The people were very friendly, and I felt very welcome. After church, people left in two directions, which I thought was a shame because you miss people. But it's a cramped church with so many people, so I understand.
There's a restroom at the back of the church, near the main entrance. I always like to know that.
Even if you're not religious, I think it's wonderful to come here on a Sunday morning. I hope you'll experience the same atmosphere in this church and community that I did, and who knows, it might bring you peace and insights."

"The beautiful organ in the old church with a powerful sound that supports the singing of a full church.
The church was built in Gothic style and also has a beautiful pulpit. You can visit the church on Saturdays.
And you can also enjoy the organ regularly. There are also several graves in the church. More than worth a visit. Services begin at 9:55 AM and 6:25 PM. You keep discovering new things. More than worth a visit. Went again today and was lucky that the organ was being played. I was able to sit down and enjoy it for a while, because it was raining outside."

"The place to seek God's face, even as an atheist, who then becomes a Bible bearer through Jesus' love.
And those few hours a week, those charging station users will have to get used to that, because they still have 165 hours left in the week, Johan Leisner.
