Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate the Provinciehuis Groningen for its historical significance and prime location next to the Martini Church. While interior access is limited, its architectural presence is noted. Some find the modern interior decor less appealing than the historic exterior.

"Beautiful building. Indoors a bit too modern-yet-efficiently and too colorful decorated."

Florian Weigl

"Openmonumentsday in The Netherlands, inside the old Proninciehuis"

John Berrelkamp

"On June 20, 1601, the States of Groningen decided that a provincial government building should be built in the former St. Martin's School.

After extensive renovations, the first meeting of the Provincial Council took place on June 16, 1602, in the state hall of the renovated building.

From 1603 onward, the Provincial Executive also met in the Provincial Executive Room.

To give the States some cachet, sentries stood on either side of the entrance gate during meetings.

However, this custom gradually disappeared.

During the farmers' protest of 2019, angry farmers stormed the provincial government building and forced the doors open with a tractor."
