What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Hernen Castle for its unique 'talking lantern' audio tour and its authentic, largely unfurnished medieval structure. It's particularly lauded as a fantastic family destination, with special events bringing history to life for children. While some note it's smaller than expected, the overall experience is highly recommended for its engaging approach to history and friendly staff.
"We had a lovely visit during one of their events. The girls got to be princesses for the day and dress up, do arts & crafts, and even be knighted when they completed all their assignments. I really recommend this as a nice day out with all the family.
There’s also a guided audio tour, I was really impressed by their incorporation of modern day equipment and technology!"

"Smaller than expected but still a nice place for a few hours walk and exploring."

"A very nice experience, especially for kids. The day we were there (Saturday) there were knights and lords walking around with swords and all dressed up. Others were preparing food on fires of wood. Some ladies making yarn from pure untouched wool on an ancient device. The small step in the castle brought us back 500 years in time.
The tour inside is done in a great way too. Where you get an old lamp, but it's magic in away as it can read some markings on the wall and then speaks out nice info about the places you see around you. For kids they placed the markings on lower height so they can hold the lamp and look for the info (adapted to the young ones) themselves.
Thumbs up for the staff too as they were without exception very friendly and accommodating, both for adults and kids.
I will surely come back to check out the spots we might have missed the first time."
