Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate the Doelenpoort for its beautiful architecture and significant historical context, offering a quiet glimpse into Leiden's past as a militia stronghold. It's noted as a peaceful, often overlooked gem, perfect for a brief, enriching stop.

"The ‘Doelenpoort’ (Doelen gate) was the access in past times to the pratice area of the Saint John and Saint Sebastian local militia. ‘Doelen’ is the Dutch word for local militia. The limestone gate was designed in 1645 by the city’s architect Arent van ‘s-Gravensande. The statues above on the gate depict Saint-George slaying the dragon.

The militia was made up of local citizens who played a major part in defending Leiden in times of war and maintaining public order. In the 19th century the Doelen area became army barracks for the Dutch land army. The building right next to this gate was part of the army base. In modern times it is used by Leiden University for educational purposes."
