Accessibility & Timing

The main path from the parking lot can be sandy and steep, posing a challenge for those with mobility issues. Check if the waterfall is operational, as maintenance work can occur, especially between January and May.

Yes, this is actually the LARGEST waterfall in this country. 😂 Because The Netherlands is quite a flat country, waterfalls are somewhat hard to come by. So much so that this one had to be man-made! This is The Loenense Waterval located in Gelderland. In our most recent vl0g where we visited The Hoge Veluwe National Park and Veluwezoom to see the blooming heather, we had to make a stop at thi...

"Wonderful place to see, the water drops down and the stream follows a beautiful pad into the woods. Loenen is a beautiful region to walk, bike and trekking. Also a lot of good comfort places to stay."

Bernhard Hol

"Even though the waterfall is small, it’s really one of the beautiful place in this city. Well spent evening along with the forest and the waterfall, really kids will be safe and love it. You will have decent parking and small fries shop."

Nevz - Cool Swag

"We traveled to this ‘waterfall’ as part of our giant trip from UK to Norway to Spain and back! We loved that this small waterfall was the largest in the country and felt it needed a visit.
It is not accessible to people who have mobility issues due to a steep-ish hill made of sand between it and the car park. There may have been another pathway around, but this was the most obvious one.
It was quiet and had lots of walks spiking off in different directions. It would be a lovely place to bring young children or dogs for a walk."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Story Behind the Cascade

The Loenense Waterfall is not a natural wonder but a fascinating piece of engineering. Constructed in 1869, this man-made cascade is part of an artificial canal stretching nearly four miles. Its primary purpose was to regulate the flow of groundwater from the top of Mount Vrijenberg to the Apeldoorns Canal, preventing the water from flowing too rapidly. The 'waterfall' itself is essentially a series of steps designed to manage this descent, making it the largest of its kind in the Netherlands. InstagramReddit

While it may not possess the raw power of natural waterfalls, its unique origin and integration into the landscape offer a different kind of appreciation. Visitors often remark on its charm and the ingenuity behind its creation. It's a testament to how human intervention can create points of interest within natural settings. InstagramReddit

This historical context adds another layer to the visitor experience. Understanding that this is a functional piece of infrastructure, designed for a specific purpose, can shift the perspective from expecting a wild natural phenomenon to appreciating a historical and functional landscape feature. Reddit

Exploring the Veluwe's Natural Beauty

The Loenense Waterfall is nestled within the expansive and beautiful Veluwe region, a large forested area known for its diverse landscapes, including heathlands, sand dunes, and woodlands. The trails surrounding the waterfall are perfect for those who enjoy walking, hiking, and cycling. These paths offer a chance to immerse yourself in the tranquility of the Dutch nature, with opportunities to spot local flora and fauna. InstagramReddit

Many visitors combine a trip to the waterfall with longer excursions into the Veluwe National Park or the Veluwezoom National Park. These parks offer more extensive trail networks and varied scenery. The forest around the waterfall is particularly enchanting during autumn, when the leaves turn vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow, creating a picturesque setting. Instagram

For those looking to extend their stay, the region offers various accommodation options, from cozy bed and breakfasts to more modern hotels. The combination of the unique waterfall and the vast natural beauty of the Veluwe makes it a compelling destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Reddit
