What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Utrecht University Library Uithof is praised for its quiet study environment and modern architecture, making it a functional space for academic pursuits. However, some visitors find the atmosphere cold and alienating due to limited natural light and a lack of comfortable seating. Cleanliness has also been a point of concern for some patrons.
"Quite alienating atmosphere.
All the facades are covered with semi- transparent windows that don't let in natural light. The result is that from the moment you enter you don't really feel time passing over the day. The only colours are black and white, as if the only thing students should put their eyes on is their screen.
So many empty spaces and yet no such thing as a chill area where you can relax on a sofa for 5 minutes. Only uncomfortable red boxes in the middle of hallways. Overall the atmosphere is quite cold and personally a bit depressing too. If I can, I just go to other study areas in the campus.
Then there is this odd pattern of bamboo on the windows which makes no sense to me, it is the same repeated over and over, even on the cement walls."

Architectural Design and Atmosphere
Despite the ample open spaces, the library lacks dedicated 'chill areas' with comfortable seating, instead featuring 'uncomfortable red boxes' in hallways. This design philosophy contributes to an atmosphere that some find 'depressing,' leading them to seek study spaces elsewhere on campus. For those who prioritize a quiet, distraction-free environment for intense study, the library's design may be highly effective, but it's important for visitors to be aware of its unique, and potentially uninviting, character.
Navigating the Library and Finding Resources
During peak periods, especially exam weeks, the library becomes very crowded. Securing a desirable study spot requires arriving early in the day. The library staff and security are generally described as 'friendly and helpful,' which can be a great resource if you need assistance navigating the building or finding specific sections. While the focus is on academic study, remember to be mindful of the quiet zones and respect the study environment of others.
