What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
MergelRijk is widely praised as an interactive and educational experience for all ages, with highlights including 3D paintings and marl carving. Visitors appreciate the unique underground setting and the blend of history and fun, though some find the English information limited and the overall experience a bit pricey.
"What a fantastic, interactive and educational place this is for both adults and kids. Here one learns a lot about the limestone cave/quarries of the area as well as seeing artefacts and fossils from dinos and other animals. The 3D paintings are the cherry on the cake. A must see if you're in Zuid Limburg."

"Awesome experience! Very fun to be walking around a few feet underground and learning a thing or two about how the mineworkers got to work there. There's plenty to learn about dinosaurs (although some information is a bit outdated). The sculptures in the walls made by university students, about ten years ago, and on the displays are absolutely amazing to look at and there's some interactivity as well! You can carve out your own piece of rock and there's a section where you get to draw on the walls (if you dare to enter as it is dark and spooky!). Definitely recommended. It is quite the walk up the hill from Valkenburg, so I recommend leaving on time. Sometimes if you're a little earlier that's okay too."

"At first, I thought this was overpriced, but it's quite extensive and interesting, so by the time we finished our visit, I was satisfied that I had not paid too much. It's a good mixture of informative history (though this is all a replica of Gemeentegrot and some of the other sections of the marl mines) and entertainment, and even includes some fun interactive displays. It would be a good place to bring children, I think."
