What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the unique atmosphere of the Velvet Cave, especially its historical charcoal drawings and the charm of the underground Christmas market. The castle ruins offer scenic views and a touch of history. While tours are in Dutch, English information sheets and helpful guides enhance the experience. Some find the shopping stalls to be of mixed quality, but the overall underground experience is highly recommended.
"We been there for the Christmas market. The place is nice and not so crowded. The cave has amazing portraits of the history of Valkenburg and also inside the cave they have cute Christmas decorations when you walk inside. There are lots of stores inside too and some of it are like china made items but there are also hand craft items that you can find. Almost of the end or exit of the cave you can find the restaurant/pubs. You can feel the busy area and nice vibe inside the cave"
Cheryll Dela Cruz
"While it’s not the greatest ever Christmas market you get to see, I think it was worth the entry fee to see the caves and some incredible carving/artwork - plus the market does have some nice stalls.
If you’re coming in a week day, you don’t need to buy tickets in advance. We only had time to see one of the caves and the tourist office will give you some good advice depending on what you’re interested in/if you have kids etc. It was €9 euros to get into the Velvet cave with zero waiting time during a week day early afternoon"

"Really enjoyed the tour of the caves, went especially to see the cave paintings, wasn't disappointed they are lovely.
Although the tour is in Dutch, ( no different really to visitors to our country who go on tours here to Stately homes etc, it's all done in our own language) the guide was very good and was helpful to us English speaking people. If we had any questions, he was more than happy to answer. You do get a sheet of paper that explains certain points and paintings in English that you can read.
There are toilets in the ticket office, and a drinks machine
Well worth a visit."
