What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Balijbos is a beloved natural escape, especially praised for its expansive off-leash dog area and beautiful autumn scenery. Visitors appreciate the varied terrains and the option to extend walks to nearby lakes. However, some note issues with shared paths, limited waste bins, and occasional muddy conditions.
"A great place to walk the dogs. A large sniffing area with various terrains. A small beach with clean water (September 24th) and long walking paths are available. Be careful with some crossbreeds, as there are cyclists and horseback riders. Ideal for a sniffing safari."
Hans
"Nice forest, nice walking route. Could have a bit more and clearer separation of cyclists and off-leash area. The cyclists did not seem to take dogs into account, very fast and angry at the bridge where the cycle path and off-leash area "touch" each other. However, many grass awns in various places at the parking, the beginning of the off-leash area and on the lawn around the bridge and trees next to the large pond. . Little to no possibility to deposit dog poop in a container along the way. Presumably that various owners unfortunately leave it there.
The ditches along the way are very dirty and swampy .... the trick is to end up in the clean ditch at the "beach". That is not very big, so quickly flooded with just a few too many dogs at the same time. A bit more and wider "beach" would be a very welcome improvement in my humble opinion😇
With a pram and a buggy for an elderly dog, this is a nice walking route for young and old in any case!"

"The Ballijbos forest is wonderful for a walk with your dog, who can run freely almost anywhere. There's a children's play area where dogs are not allowed. You can wander around and walk through the greenery to the Dobbeplas lake or even to Delft."

One aspect that travelers frequently mention is the interaction between different user groups. While the forest is designed for shared use, there can be friction between cyclists, horseback riders, and dog walkers, particularly on narrower or intersecting paths. Some visitors suggest clearer separation of these areas to improve safety and reduce potential conflicts.
Despite these minor challenges, the overall experience is positive. The forest is described as beautiful and great for a stroll, with routes suitable for all ages and abilities, including those with prams or elderly dogs.
Seasonal Beauty and Practicalities
Beyond the visual appeal, practical considerations are important. Some areas of the forest can accumulate grass awns, especially around parking areas and grassy spots near the pond. Wearing appropriate footwear is recommended to avoid discomfort.
Another point raised by visitors is the scarcity of dog waste bins. This can lead to some owners leaving waste behind, detracting from the natural beauty. Planning ahead and carrying your own waste bags is a good practice to help maintain the cleanliness of the park.
