Reviews Summary

Mount Sunday is a breathtaking location, especially for Lord of the Rings fans, offering awe-inspiring views and a unique connection to Middle-earth. While the drive can be challenging and the summit is very windy with no shade, the scenic beauty and the experience of standing on the Edoras filming site make it a highly rewarding visit. InstagramReddit

"A beautiful place to visit but I think it would be totally awesome when there's more snow on the surrounding hills. Takes a while to get there too."

Peter Robinson

"Awesome place for lord of the rings fans.

There is a toilet at the carpark but suggest to use the one at the earlier stop.

Need to follow the follow the markers not the wide gravel path.

There were cows grazing the lands. Some cows actually came really close to us. Need to be careful around them.

There are gates along the way that you need to open and close. Someone forgot to close the gate and some cows came out of the boundary, resulted in the cow loitering and running around the gates.

There are a few bridges along the way. Maximum one person crossing at a time.

The trail is not shaded so good to wear a cap. The last part is a more steep climb. It is super windy at the top.

Worth the visit, the drive in is also very scenic and beautiful."

Z D Y

"Fantastic experience! A must for all Lord of the Rings fans. The drive over can be a bit difficult, but well worth it.

For parking, it is at the "Public Bathroom" spot to the right of this. Time in total is like 45min up, just follow the signs.

The view from the top is awe-inspiring. There are very few people who visit this. It is not a very difficult hike, but it does get tough for like 10min, then the rest is a walk."

The Lord of the Rings Connection

Mount Sunday holds a special place in the hearts of Lord of the Rings fans worldwide. This remote hill in the Hakatere Conservation Park was transformed into Edoras, the magnificent capital city of Rohan, for the film trilogy. While the elaborate set, including the Golden Hall of Meduseld, is no longer present, the natural landscape perfectly captured the essence of the fictional kingdom. Visitors can easily imagine King Théoden and his riders surveying their lands from this very spot. Instagram+2

The choice of Mount Sunday was strategic; its isolated, windswept nature and the surrounding vast plains evoked the spirit of Rohan. The filmmakers utilized the hill's natural shape to create a believable fortress. Even without the physical set, the Middle-earth magic is palpable, making it a pilgrimage site for fans seeking to connect with the cinematic world. Instagram+1

Many visitors find the experience deeply moving, describing it as stepping into the movie. The sheer scale of the landscape and its resemblance to the film's depiction of Rohan are consistently highlighted. It’s a place where cinematic history meets breathtaking natural beauty. InstagramReddit

Navigating the Terrain and Weather

Reaching Mount Sunday involves a journey through the picturesque Canterbury landscape, but it's not without its challenges.
