"Mangauika / North Head is an extinct volcano that erupted thousands of years ago and is part of Auckland Volcanic Fields. An ancestral mountain for Maori iwis in Auckland. The New Zealand Army used this volcano as a fortification with batteries scattered throughout the mountain.
Access to Mangauika is quite easy with a car park up to the slopes of the volcano. Then the hike is quite easy and not steep at all. By walking, its also easily accessible from Cheltenham Beach.

"Very informative history of the War Tunnels and walking through them gives you the feel of what it must have felt like for all brave people who fought to save this beautiful country.
The scenery is amazing. It's well worth the visit but some areas may be difficult for people not too good on their feet."
