Reviews Summary

Tuff Crater Reserve is praised for its beautiful nature walks and the unique geological feature of an ancient volcanic crater. Visitors enjoy the abundance of native birdlife and the well-maintained walkway, making it a peaceful escape. However, some find the on-site cafe's food to be expensive with small portions.

"For those loving the outdoors, a great nature walk around the historic volcanic crater."

Glen Hill-Willis

"Expensive Food
The hot chocolate and mocha doesn't taste that good compared to the cafes outside. Taste a bit like syrup.
The food can sometimes be of small portions with a high price.
$1.80 for 1/3 of a sausage roll isn't an ideal price and kinda makes you feel like you are being ripped off.
I don't have much good things to say about the cafe apart from the staff who are friendly
It's a place to eat once in a while but not a place you would come and eat everyday because the food is such small portion and so expensive .
On a positive note the cafe has made me a better person in questioning myself on spending lunch money"

R Lam

"Lovely walk.. you can see a host of native birds and certain hear the calls of the banded rail. Look to go during high tide to have a chance of catching a glimpse of the rail and crake"

The Geological Marvel: Tuff Crater

Tuff Crater Reserve is home to a fascinating geological feature: a tuff cone volcano that erupted approximately 250,000 years ago. Unlike basaltic volcanoes, tuff cones are formed by explosive eruptions where magma interacts with groundwater, ejecting ash, rock fragments, and steam. The resulting cone is composed of consolidated volcanic ash and debris, known as tuff. Walking around the reserve allows you to appreciate the scale and unique formation of this ancient volcanic landscape. It's a tangible connection to Auckland's dynamic geological history. TikTok

Tuff Crater Reserve is a vital habitat for a variety of native New Zealand birds. Visitors often report hearing and seeing species such as the banded rail and crake. These ground-dwelling birds are more likely to be spotted during high tide, as the rising water levels can push them closer to the walking paths. Bringing binoculars is highly recommended to get a better view and appreciate their presence without disturbing them. Reddit

Beyond the rails and crakes, the reserve's bushland supports a diverse ecosystem. Keep an ear out for the distinctive calls of other native birds, and be patient – sometimes the best wildlife sightings happen when you least expect them. The reserve's commitment to preserving this natural environment makes it a rewarding destination for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers alike. InstagramReddit
