You think you've seen rain before? Think again... My first time cruising Milford Sound in about 5 years, got unbelievably lucky with these conditions! Day trip to Mount Burns Tarns, located near Borland Saddle in Fiordland National Park, New Zealand. A fairly short walk requiring moderate fitness. Easy to follow a well marked path up a ridge after a short walk through some magical mossy trees to the treeline. Countless tarns and great views are the reward for your efforts.

Reviews Summary

Borland Saddle is lauded as a 'hidden jewel' for its off-the-beaten-path charm and stunning alpine scenery, particularly its numerous tarns and the rewarding hike to Mount Burns. Visitors appreciate the initial mossy forest walk and the expansive views. However, some note the trail can be indistinct above the treeline and Fiordland's unpredictable weather requires careful preparation.

"We parked at the beginning of the alpine walkway but walked in the opposite direction towards the pylons. The flowers were lovely to see and the views were excellent. If you can't walk far you can always just do thus short walk. I really enjoyed it."

"This is the definition of hidden jewel. It's off the beaten path; one of the things that make it even better. It's a bit of a drive on a dirt/gravel road that narrows in spots. The car park and trail head are well-marked. The trail begins though beautiful forest, but before long is wide open. The trail is extremely narrow the entire way. Once you clear the tree line, it is not always obvious due to plant growth around/over it. There are orange trail markers here and there to assist. In the worst case, though, just continue up the saddle. You can only go up or over the side. Once you reach the top, the numerous small lakes and view of surrounding mountains and valleys will make you glad you came here."

John Hallford

"Such a great playground, can almost walk where ever you want above the bush line. Reaching Mt Burns is not really hard."
