"I got a A in maths and not an A+ so my parents sent me here last year. Lots of nice nature and people, and the monkeys are fun to socialise with"

"Ever since my parents dropped me off here (literally, they took a plane and just dropped me here) ten years ago after I failed a math exam, I was very lucky to call this place my home. Together with other failures, I have enjoyed a very peaceful and fun life far from the rest of civilization. We also have very nice nature & architecture here, so I recommend being dropped off here after your parents called you a dissapointment!"

"I was sent here after getting a B+ on a math exam. I quite enjoyed the other people who are called "failure tribe." I think me and the failure tribe have something in common. If your parents send you here one day, expect a delightful surprise"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Journey to Disappointment Island

Reaching Disappointment Island is an expedition in itself. It typically involves booking passage on a specialized expedition cruise that sails from New Zealand. These voyages are often lengthy, taking several days to reach the remote Auckland Islands archipelago. The sea conditions can be notoriously rough, as the islands lie in the 'Roaring Forties' and 'Furious Fifties' latitudes, known for strong westerly winds and large swells. Travelers should be prepared for a potentially challenging but rewarding sea journey. Reddit

Preparation is key for this remote destination. Unlike typical tourist spots, there are no hotels, restaurants, or visitor centers. All provisions, including food, water, and appropriate gear, must be brought by the visitor. The focus is on experiencing a truly wild and untouched environment, emphasizing self-reliance and respect for nature. Reddit

When planning, look for operators who prioritize responsible tourism and have a strong environmental ethos. They will provide detailed briefings on safety, wildlife interaction, and the strict 'leave no trace' policy that is paramount for preserving this unique subantarctic ecosystem. Reddit

Wildlife Encounters

Disappointment Island is a critical breeding ground for a vast array of seabirds. Visitors can expect to see large colonies of albatrosses, petrels, shearwaters, and various penguin species. The sheer numbers and variety of birds create an incredible spectacle and a photographer's dream. It's essential to maintain a respectful distance and avoid disturbing nesting sites. Reddit

Beyond the birds, the island's shores may host seals, though they are less common than on some other subantarctic islands. The marine life surrounding the islands is also rich, though direct interaction is limited to what can be observed from the shore or during zodiac excursions. The pristine marine environment is a vital part of the island's ecological significance. Reddit

Remember that this is a wild environment, and all wildlife encounters should be observed from a safe and respectful distance. Following the guidance of experienced expedition leaders is crucial for both your safety and the well-being of the animals. Reddit
