What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Doubtful Sound is overwhelmingly praised for its breathtaking, untouched beauty and serene atmosphere, often described as more magnificent than Milford Sound. Visitors highlight the incredible scenery, wildlife encounters, and the unique journey to reach the fiord. While the cost and travel time are significant, most agree it's a worthwhile, unforgettable experience, especially with an overnight cruise.
"Doubtful Sound is a must and usually the second of the 3 sounds to visit on a cruise. The views are breath taking and a must for anyone traveling to NZ esp on a cruise. The heights of some of the mountains are something to be seen."
John Winter
"Maybe because I visited Ha Long Bay and Iguazu Fall so although Doubtful Sound is beautiful it's not really living up to my expectations. I'm glad I stayed two nights in the area for some hikes (Old Doubtful track, Helena Fall, etc), otherwise I'd be very disappointed to do it as a day trip. Heard from the RealNZ crew that Doubtful Sound is more magnificent than the Milford, now I have zero interest in doing Milford cruise."

"This place was one of my main reasons for traveling to New Zealand. It did not disappoint. I went to Milford Sound as well. While both are incredible sights, Doubtful Sound has several advantages. It covers a larger area, begins with a cruise across Manipouri Lake, and affords the opportunity to see some of the forest on the bus ride between the lake and the sound. Perhaps the biggest advantage is that there is just one company running two cruises per day (and an overnight) instead of multiple companies running 6-7 cruises per day each. It's much quieter/more isolated as a result. I took the first cruise of the day. The view of Manipouri Lake as it transitioned from nighttime to daylight added to the experience. I hoped for rain so I could see as many falls along the way as possible. It rained the night before and a good portion of the day of the cruise. The views were specular. The rain just meant I was going to get wet to enjoy some of them. Turns out I dried off just fine and didn't melt before that happened. I can't begin to do justice to the sights I saw with words, so I'll just say go see it. You'll be glad you did."
