"Loved our finale couple of nights at Whitianga and really enjoyed the wee ferry ride across the estuary. $8 return as I recall and only takes a couple of minutes. Whilst on the other side we walked up to Whitianga Rock and also did the longer walk upto Maramaratotara Lookout and down to the beach/bay. Highly recommended"
