Preserving Heritage, Facing Neglect

Hamilton East Cemetery is a historic site, but reviews highlight significant neglect. While beautiful, many headstones need cleaning and repair. Rabbit burrows pose a safety hazard. Consider this a place for quiet reflection rather than a perfectly manicured attraction.

Navigating the Grounds

Finding specific graves can be challenging due to the lack of maps and assistance. The toilet block is no longer operational, so utilize facilities at the nearby Hamilton Gardens. Be mindful of uneven terrain and rabbit holes when exploring.

Local History

Hi everyone, I've just moved to Hamilton and will be spending the summer here. I love exploring different parts of the city and was wondering what the best ways would be to delve deeper into the history of the area. I found some good resources online but would love any more as…

Plan for Facilities

Reviews Summary

Hamilton East Cemetery is a historic and beautiful site, though it suffers from significant neglect. Visitors appreciate its quiet atmosphere and poignant sections like the returned soldiers' memorial, but note the need for headstone cleaning, repair, and better site maintenance, including addressing rabbit burrows. The lack of maps also makes finding graves challenging.

"this cemetery is still lovely and quiet but very neglected. All the headstones need to be cleaned off properly after spending 2 hours up there trying to find a grave and not one person around to ask for help was pretty poor. There used to be a map in the area where you could go and look up certain areas now all gone . even the toilet block is no longer there. its too far to expect people to go down to the Hamilton gardens to use them..The worse thing is all the rabbit burrows around the graves making it quite dangerous to walk round them . They have made a start to do work on the returned soldiers section which is good but it would be nice if they could do work on all other graves like we saw overseas where volunteers cleaned all headstones and weeded round them instead of letting them get so neglected It does need looking at as its part of our heritage and needs to be preserved ."

Margaret Nicholls

"A pleasant location situated by the Hamilton Gardens, this historic cemetery has many graves in need of repair or maintenance. The toilet block was out of action when I was there in early 2018, but there are facilities in the Gardens."

Lia T

"Always in need of some maintenance but worthy of a walk around, the soldiers section and the Catholic area with nuns passed found quite moving, a peaceful time grateful you can't hear the endless traffic."
