What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Waiau River for its stunning natural beauty, especially the dramatic gorge and the impressive new cycle trail bridge. It's a fantastic spot for cycling and trout fishing, offering a true taste of New Zealand's outdoors. Some find the river name confusing due to other Waiau Rivers in the country.
"The Waiau River (Pacific Ocean) rises in the Spenser Mountains at an elevation of approximately 1,680 m. (It should not be confused with the Waiau River in Southland!) In the lowlands, it flows gently downwards in vast meanders. Whitewater rafting is very popular near Hanmer Springs in this gorge-filled section. The estuary into the Pacific Ocean is located near Cheviot. At 3,310 km², the catchment area is the largest in North Canterbury.
Almost its entire length is suitable for brown trout fishing, and in the lower reaches, sea trout and salmon are also seasonally available.
The river was formerly known as Waiau-ua (Maori) or Dillon."
