"The Waiau River (Pacific Ocean) rises in the Spenser Mountains at an elevation of approximately 1,680 m. (It should not be confused with the Waiau River in Southland!) In the lowlands, it flows gently downwards in vast meanders. Whitewater rafting is very popular near Hanmer Springs in this gorge-filled section. The estuary into the Pacific Ocean is located near Cheviot. At 3,310 km², the catchment area is the largest in North Canterbury.
