🐳A house built on WHALE bones We went to the town of Kaikoura which is famous for whale WATCHING but back in the day it was famous for whale HUNTING. A man named Robert Fyfe built a whaling station and started to build this house, (Fyfe house) near his business. He used what resources he had and so he built the house on whale vertebrates. Although this town has quite a dark past it was really...

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Fyffe House for its unique history and construction, noting the friendly and knowledgeable staff who provide engaging insights. The beautiful garden and coastal location add to its charm, making it a worthwhile stop for those interested in local heritage. Some find it a bit pricey for the duration, but generally consider it a good value for the experience.

"Third time here now over the last 10-15 years…always a fun thrill seekers ride (not too crazy)
Simple set up yet effective. Definitely pays to go during off season or in cooler weather as there are little lines.
One star deducted as it’s fairly expensive for what it is, there are 4 runs and if you want to do them all you’re over 150$ pp…adds up quickly with multiple children (no child pricing). Find a coupon if you can, they’re rare.
The spa pools at the bottom are great to warm in, there is one at the top for while you wait but it was closed on the cold day we were there for some reason.
Other than your bank account you won’t regret stopping it, pleasant staff all around."

Greg Beldock

"Beautiful location for a lovely historic building. We only had 30 minutes to look around before closing, but the custodian was very friendly and knowledgeable.
Amazing garden and great history."

Sarah Ede

"Well worth the $10 entry fee! Very interesting history. Self-guided but a volunteer (?) spent about 10 mins at the start giving us an overview. Given her accent (Scottish?) I suspect she wasn't born and bred here but her knowledge was impressive and conveyed a deep level of understanding.
Highly recommended."
