@New Zealand leaving me in awe every time. 💙 From swimming with wild dolphins in Kaikoura, to kayaking the Abel Tasman, to capturing the wild Whirinaki beach and finally hiking in Arthur’s Pass. Our 5 day road trip in November was a whirlwind. Where else in the world can you experience such a diverse range of experiences in such a short time?! Highly recommend a visit during this shoulder season ...

Found this Mako Shark washed up on the beach near Kaikoura. Thought it was best to drag it back to the sea as it was up on the high tide mark and would've just sat up on the beach to rot and stink. Not sure if it actually stayed out there as it kept rolling back in.

Reviews Summary

Kaikoura is celebrated for its breathtaking coastal scenery, dramatic mountain backdrop, and unparalleled marine wildlife encounters, particularly whale watching and dolphin swims. Visitors appreciate the unique black sand beaches and the opportunity to see fur seals. While some find the pebble beaches disappointing, the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive, with many highlighting the fresh seafood as a culinary delight.

"Kaikōura is a picturesque coastal town on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island, approximately 180km north of Christchurch. Its name, a native Māori word - meaning "meal of crayfish", reflects the abundance of seafood in the area, a tradition that continues to this day with delicious local crayfish being a highlight.

What makes Kaikōura truly special is its unique geography. The town is dramatically set between the towering, often snow-capped seaward Kaikōura Range (a branch of the Southern Alps) and the Pacific Ocean. This proximity of mountains to sea is unusual and stunning. Just offshore lies the Kaikōura Canyon, a deep submarine trench that brings nutrient-rich upwellings from the depths of the Hikurangi Trench to the surface. This creates an incredibly biodiverse marine environment, attracting a wide variety of marine life.

Kaikōura is most famous for its year-round population of sperm whales, which are frequently sighted by whale watching tours. Other marine mammals often seen include various species of dolphins (including playful dusky dolphins and the rare Hector's dolphin), orcas, and a thriving colony of New Zealand fur seals. The area is also a haven for seabirds, with numerous species including albatrosses, petrels, and shearwaters.

Despite suffering severe damage in the 2016 earthquake, the town has remarkably rebuilt its infrastructure and services, remaining a vibrant and welcoming destination that champions marine conservation and sustainable tourism."

"Nice beach but most of the shoreline is filled with stones. This is a good walking track.

My kids were disappointed that there was no sand. The scenic view and the bathroom allows me to give it 3 stars. Else it would have been 2!"

Sid

"This back is black volcanic sand. The colour gives a total different feel from white sand beaches. The length of the beach gives so much expense of the sea and skies. Seal colonies can be found here. We saw 1 lone seal lazing around."
